Guest guest
In June, social workers in Arizona learned that the state Medicaid program has decided to stop covering organ transplants as of October 1, 2010. A similar rule exists in Florida despite repeated efforts to change it. According to Medicaid rules, once a beneficiary turns 22, transplants are optional services, meaning that each state can decide for itself whether or not it wants to cover adult transplants under the state's Medicaid program. Transplants are covered for people with CF younger than 22 as it is considered part of a medically necessary service. As states continue to make drastic cuts to their budgets in an effort to manage their ongoing economic concerns, it is exceedingly possible that more states will choose to cut services such as adult transplants. Information Needed The Public Policy Department at the CF Foundation is investigating how best to address this issue. In order to do so, they need a better understanding of the scope of the problem.
