Guest guest
Don't feel like a dummy! I don't get it either! And that is despite having tried to research it and reading several articles on it. The best I can come up with is that silica that is crystalline is the worst and is most often associated with scleroderma. Crystalline silica is in sand, glass and many many applications. Workers with this form of silica can develop cancer, silicosis or scleroderma. The amorphous silica is safer, but apparently it too can cause problems. The inhalation risk is not there, but I have read reports showing that people exposed to too much silica--whether through makeup, lotions, or ingesting it, can develop kidney disease problems. Combine that with data from some women on this group who get worse if they ingest any silica, and I have come to the conclusion I want to stay away from it as mucn as possible. I buy supplements free fromit when possible. Also, mineral makeup does contain silica, and I had read somewhere where some people felt it caued their skin to feel tighter. That is why I don't want to use it. Tight skin is a symptom of scleroderma. Since I have already dealt with sclero symptoms, I just feel safer not taking the chance of aggravating the situation. Obviously we aren't all going to react to silica. I wish they would research it more. It has good uses, but is very poorly understood as to which kinds, in what amounts, in what route of exposure, cause problems. For me, to be on the safe side, I limit my exposure to silica and any form of silicone which is far too prevalent in everything we use.
