Hi Cherie,

I'd say if running two miles is easy and you're not out of breath, you

should run either further or harder, you're not getting your heart rate up

fast enough. You are very active but it sounds like your body is accustomed

to your level of activity. Also, your breakfast is pretty low in protein,

could you add a couple of egg whites to your breakfast? One final thing I

would suggest is eating six small meals throughout the day rather than three

meals. Eating throughout the day will help your body function better. This

is something my personal trainer recommends to all of his clients, whether

they are trying to lose or gain weight. The carbs at dinner could be a

problem too. You might eat them earlier in the day and see if that helps.

Let me know how it goes! :)

Hi, Cherie!

I was rereading your food intake and had a few more thoughts. I guess I

needed the break from studying tonight. :)

If you are drinking fruit juice in the morning and having tea with sugar

later on, you are consuming a lot of sugar through out the day, even though

most of it is natural sugar. If your vegetable juice includes carrots,

there's a lot of sugar there too. As we know, sugar turns to fat, like

everything else, when it isn't utilized, plus it messes with your blood

sugar.

Back to studying. :(

What is it that makes you feel limited? Is it eating healthy or do you have

food allergies? Have you tried looking for a different creamer maybe from a

health food store that has better ingredients in it? Usually there are

healthier alternatives for things we really like if we look for them.

Figuring out what works for your body takes time, don't worry about the

weight, you'll get it all figured out and lose the weight you want to lose.

You have a couple of things you can work on, increasing your running

distance or speed will help and making a few diet modifications will as

well. You're well on your way! :)

Hi Cherie,

I had the weight vs. age conversation with my personal trainer today. I'm

45 as well. He said that things do shift as we age, metabolisms do slow but

if we exercise and eat right we can fight it every step of the way. It's

possible for us to be in better shape as we age than we were when we were

younger. I'm in better shape at 45 than I was at 30, maybe even 25. I am

much stronger and healthier. You just need to find out what works with your

body. As my trainer put it today, your body has no choice but to respond

when we eat good or bad or exercise or not exercise.

Cherie

I also have gained about 20 lbs since January...... never had weight issues before... I have a growth on my thyroid and I don't know if that is connected... I thought it was new anti depressants I was prescribed so I recently changed them. we will see. weight gain is not uncommon at all amongst us implant survivors unfortunately....

Hi Cherie,

I have had my trainer coming up on 7 years now. I started originally

because I had a herniated L5/S1 disk and wanted to strengthen my body to see

if I could improve the pain and hopefully stop taking the

anti-inflammatories and pain killers. I had no idea how much it would help.

Today my back is fine for the most part. If I strain it, I am sore for a

day or two, not the weeks or months before and my daily pain is completely

gone. There is no way I could have done this on my own in the gym. When I

first joined the gym, my trainer was telling me about his wife's back and

how my doctor wanted to do back surgery on her. She refused, even though

she had bone on bone disks. She told him that she would take care of it on

her own. Through exercise, she, too, is pain free. I figured if she could

do it, so could I!

I see my trainer three times a week at his gym. I have two lower body days

and one upper body day. He chooses my workouts, sets up weight, and makes

sure I use proper form. Without good form, injury is likely, especially for

me. He takes me from machine to machine or to free weights and watches

everything I do. It's a great investment in yourself, if one can afford it.

Even buying a few training sessions is a good idea if you'd rather not have

a trainer long term because they show you how to use the machines and proper

form. It is amazing how many people in gyms use terrible form and are doing

themselves more harm than good.

Did you eat your cereal with your egg whites? You should really have 6

small balanced meals, 1/3 each of protein, starchy carb and fruit/vegetable.

Here's a bit below on carb craving I found online. The South Beach diet

book advocates eating lower glycemic index carbs (as is mentioned below) so

you don't get the sugar rush caused by simple carbs. I have heard it

referred to as a low carb diet like Atkins but it isn't. Eating whole wheat

pasta -- real whole wheat, not processed garbage, corn or brown rice pasta

is a better choice than semolina. Trying to eat everything in its most

unprocessed state is best. When I make pasta for my family, I make brown

rice for me instead and put the sauce on it. I actually prefer it to pasta

-- my kids and husband don't. :)

Kenda

The terms " carbohydrate craving " or " carbohydrate addiction " are used in a

theory about the relationship between carbohydrate, insulin and appetite. We

know that eating carbohydrate raises insulin, which then lowers blood sugar.

This causes a desire (or craving) for more food and, for some people,

carbohydrates in particular.

High-sugar, refined starch, convenience and comfort foods feed the addiction

like a drug. They produce correspondingly high blood sugar and insulin

levels, which lead to even more cravings. They also produce higher levels of

the brain chemical serotonin. In sensitive people, particularly those who

may have low serotonin levels to begin with, a carbohydrate binge is the

equivalent of self-medication - getting a sugar " high. "

We don't really know enough about all the factors that cause specific food

cravings; more research is needed to help understand appetite. Many studies

suggest that a decrease in blood sugar stimulates hunger. This might help

explain a craving for foods high in carbohydrates, which are a quick energy

source. Biology isn¹t the only reason why we eat. Food is powerfully

connected to our emotions. For many people, the mere thought of a favorite

food evokes strong associations that blend image, senses, emotion and memory

into a mixture that is nearly impossible to separate into the different

parts.

Some people advocate severely reducing carbohydrate intake, thus reducing

the insulin response and cravings. Others recommend choosing

carbohydrate-containing foods with a lower glycemic index in order to lower

insulin response and appetite. Research so far is inconclusive, and this is

complicated by the fact that individual responses to carbohydrates can vary

considerably.

Diets low in carbohydrate are likely to lack sufficient amounts of essential

nutrients found in plant foods that promote good health. People following

these diets may not get enough vitamins, minerals and fiber to avoid blood

chemistry imbalances, constipation and other health problems.

> Kenda, that is great that you have a personal trainer. What do they

> do? Thank you for sharing - I took your advice and had two egg

> whites for breakfast. I guess I get those pasta cravings at

Hi Sis,

Thank you! I enjoy feeling well too much to revert back to my old ways. I

spent many years sick, like many of you. Feeling good for a lot of us means

truly working at it and not taking our health for granted when we achieve

it. It's cold in Oklahoma now too so I do my cardio in the gym.. I don't

like it at all but it does make me feel better afterward. I'm studying

nutrition in school now. It is very eye opening! Sometimes what we

perceive as being healthy, isn't healthy at all. :(
