Hello,I was wondering if there are any other hospitals/ transplant centers that do charity transplants. If so, how many do you do each year? What criteria do they have to meet?Does anyone do charity VADs? We do them at our center for patients in our service area and we're trying to get an idea of how many other centers do them. Thanks,Sarita -LeachFinancial CoordinatorSeton Medical Center Austin

We have a charity care

program. The pt goes through an administrative screening process to determine

the level of charity (if any) they may qualify for. This policy is in

place for all healthcare services…not just specific to transplant.

Charity dollars will only cover

the pre, peri and post transplant care. Medications are a whole different

ball of wax. Before moving forward, the SW and TFC works with the family

to set up fundraising and access the resources available through the

appropriate transplant foundations.

We have done 1 charity BMT @ our facility. Patient had coverage for meds, however the policy had a "per dx max" which he had already exhausted with the lymphoma dx. We made him show proof he could pay for the scans and other testing associated with the evaluation. We only wrote off the actual hospital stay and post care until he was discharged from transplant status.
