Guest guest
, There are several angles or approaches you can take in trying to address this issue. My guess is that it is hormonally related, and may be due to just having whacked out hormones after getting sick from implants. It seems that men and women both experience hair loss from hormone imbalances, but balancing them again is just so hard, not to mention determining which ones are way off. The hormones can be thyroid related as well as reproductive related hormones. So, one of the first steps is to make sure you don't have a thyroid problem. Beyond that, there are several ideas to try, including vitamin supplements (especially biotin), herbs, kidney tonics, estrogen enhancing herbs, scalp massage and essential oils. I've tried the essential oils therapy and loved it. I thought that it worked well for me, and my husband even made comments about my hair looking better finally after several months of using them. There is a valid study out that shows the esssential oils work. I think you can see it somewhere in this link....this is a great website with info on various therapies to use: http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/herbsvitaminsek/a/Alopecia_2.htm There are two things that they don't mention that I might add. one is the use of homeopathics. One of our members mentioned a few months ago that she got results with a homeopathic silica remedy. It's definitely worth a try. You can get the homeopathic remedy at any health food store that carries homeopathics for about $8. Homeopathic supps are very safe. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_g2603/is_0006/ai_2603000663 Everybody is so afraid of silica supplements, understandably so, but I think we need to be prudent in thinking it through. The herb horsetail is reputedly very high in natural plant silica, and silica is necessary for strong hair and nails. I think there is a big difference in plant based silica vs man made silicone, and perhaps we need to be supplying our bodies with the right stuff while getting rid of the icky stuff? Just a thought. I bought some natural vegetal silica made by the Flora company (a very good company, by the way) and added it to my shampoo. i've taken it internally with no serious side effects. You can look this one up on the net too. http://www.florahealth.com/Flora/Home/usa/Products/R61434.asp The only other thing they don't mention that I might add is the estrogen enhancing herbs. I include this due to the fact that many women experience hair loss after pregnancy and childbirth. This is from a drastic drop in estrogen levels apparently. Estrogen enhancing herbs include fenugreek, fennel, saw palmetto, wild yam, cumin, red clover and others. It might be something to try, but you may want to do more research. If you take estrogen enhancing herbs, it would also be prudent to include the progesterone creams, since you should never supplement estrogen without also supplementing progesterone. Remember, balancing hormones is very, very tricky, so you may want to get a doctor to help with this, but generally, I tend to prefer herbs over prescription drugs and most doctors don't think this way. Anyway, those are my suggestions. Take what you want and leave the rest! I hope some of these ideas work for you. Hugs, Patty > Patty I would appreciate any suggestions? Guest guest
Here's one more great suggestion. I take EPO and plan to for the rest of my life! Patty http://thyroid.about.com/cs/hairloss/a/hairloss_2.htm Consider an Alternative Treatment When I have had major bouts of hair loss (despite low normal TSH and being on a T4/T3 drug), I took the advice of a doctor I interviewed for my book, [MI]Living Well With Hypothyroidism. Here's an excerpt from the book: .. . . evening primrose oil (also known as EPO) is a nutritional supplement that is frequently mentioned. In his book, [MI]Solved: The Riddle of Illness, Langer, M.D. points to the fact that symptoms of essential fatty acid insufficiency are very similar to hypothyroidism, and recommends evening primrose oil -- an excellent source of essential fatty acids -- as helpful for people with hypothyroidism. The usefulness of evening primrose oil, particularly in dealing with the issues of excess hair loss with hypothyroidism, was also reinforced by endocrinologist Blanchard. According to Dr. Blanchard: " For hair loss, I routinely recommend multiple vitamins, and especially evening primrose oil. If there's any sex pattern to it -- if a woman is losing hair in partly a male pattern - -then, the problem is there is excessive conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone at the level of the hair follicle. Evening primrose oil is an inhibitor of that conversion. So almost anybody with hair loss probably will benefit from evening primrose oil. " As someone who has had a few periods of extensive hair loss since I became hypothyroid, I can vouch for the fact that taking EPO was the only thing that calmed it down. It not only slowed, then stopped my hair loss over about two months, but new hair grew back, and my hair was no longer straw-like, dry and easily knotted. When I take EPO, I usually take 500 mg, twice a day. > > > Patty I would appreciate any suggestions?
