Hi Kathie,

I wouldn't risk it. The problem is if the insurance company somehow finds

out about the implants, you could be on the hook for the money. Is there

anyway you could have " exploratory " surgery for post mastectomy pain? If

you did, perhaps they could remove your implants then? :)

kathie,

go for it girl, get that explant covered any way you can. My doctor

(Hiatt in Mesa) got my insurance to cover explant and I know it was

because of a correctly worded letter. You are not a sell out...you

are getting the care you need. It is not playing games when you

know that this is what you need. They're the ones that have been

playing games all along at our expense.

You won't be lying or doing anything wrong. You are removing a

faulty device that does not belong in your body! It's up to them to

get it out and make it right. I hope you find that doctor that will

do it for you!

Isn't it interesting how some insurance companies will drop people if

they find out about implants - but yet the FDA calls them " safe " .

The insurance companies have obviously had to deal with many women

are are ill because of implants. I called my insurance company

without giving a name, and they said the only way an explant was

covered was if I got the implants because of cancer.

Kathie,

Most doctors know the codes necessary to get coverage

for explant. . . Ask the doctor. . . .

And, it's likely insurance will pay for removal if you

got your implants because of cancer.

It's going to cost the insurance company (and you) a

lot more to keep you sick than to remove them so you

can get your health back.

Rogene

hi...thanks for your response...i am curious, i have contacted

hiatt's office, and they were 1. rude, and 2. said he takes NO

insurance.... :) i will never understand how a doc makes a living

taking NO INSURANCE! wish he did, i know he is the only doc listed

in AZ with experience explanting...........sooo, i carry on with this

battle, and am trying to find a doc who will bill with the right

code...........

well mine ARE from having cancer, and immediate reconstruction, but

aetna STILL wants a diagnosis of some kind to cover removal AND has a

LOOOONNNGGGG clause saying " silicone illness " doesn't exist and is

NOT a billable concern when covering explant procedures! sigh........

i don't understand the whole aetna document, but it seems so far (i

am having an aquaintence show it to the insurance billing department

at her workplace) that i STILL need some diagnosis, listed as

acceptable, even though this is a post-mastectomy issue.........i am

so angry today about it all.............thanks for your note........

Hi Kathie

I don't think you are a sell out. YOu need to do whatever you need

to do to get this explant covered! Go for it. Who cares what the

insurance company needs you to say as long as you get the explant.

You don't need to convince them that silicone implants are harmful.

They don't really care. Insurance is just a big game when it comes

to what they will cover and won't cover--its about money and NOTHING

else so you needn't feel like a sellout---they really don't care.

Being a sellout would be not telling other women of the dangers of

implants or telling your acquaintances that you got them out because

of complications other than illness from them. Your voice will best

be used with convincing women of the dangers of implants. So please

please don't feel guilty about the insurance company. I wouldn't

give it a second thought!

Kathie,

That just makes me so sad that his office turned into a green

monster. I must have gotten in just in time before he sold his soul

to the devil. That's just wrong to take away his services like

that. But there has got to be another qualified surgeon in the

Phoenix area! Did you call all of them on our list for Arizona?

I hate to say this, but if you come up empty handed in your search

for Arizona, you may need to consider traveling out of state. I

know it seems out of reach, but for most women here, they do find a

way, someway...

Somebody needs to call them on the carpet about this one. It seems

very strange that on the one hand they want a diagnosis of some

kind. Like what I wonder? An autoimmune disease? But then they

turn around and say that there is no such thing as a silicone

illness, so how in the world do they expect to tie a diagnosis of

autoimmune disease into a need for explant if they are not related?

They seem to be talking out of both sides of their mouth and not

making any sense whatsoever.

Kathie, have you talked to someone about your need for removal

because you simply DON'T WANT THEM ANYMORE as part of your

reconstruction, due to the health concerns you DO have? It seems to

me that if it is covered as a part of your cancer diagnosis, you

should be able to get continued care under that same condition,

including getting the damn things out when you feel they aren't

helping.

Yeah, I'd like to see it if that is possible. How about telling

them that you are going to hire an attorney to press your case if

they don't find a way to help? This just seems plain wrong to me

that you can't get help after all the crying to them you have done

about it. It's like a torture that they are calling medical

assistance and recovery. Nobody should have to go through that! I

mean, isn't the whole purpose behind implants after mastectomy so

you can go on with life in a normal manner, and to receive the

psychological benefit from them of being complete? But if you are

not getting that from them, but something totally contrary, it seems

to me that they should be forced to be able to help. Keep pushing

on it Kathie...make them listen to you! And if they won't listen to

you, maybe they will listen to a lawyer!

keep in mind, my understanding is that even though at first it looks

like " cancer " is the key component (on page 1) and that i would be

covered, the second lady i talked to and read this with over the

phone, pointed out the billing/diagnosis codes that i have to have,

though as rogene pointed out, the right PS will know how to play the

game......anyway, here is the document link.....pay attention to how

the hadle the silicone/saline/autoimmune issue....the link:

What about code 300.0? Anxiety? I'd certainly push for that one if

it worked. Otherwise, I'd play their game to get it covered under

any of these others that fit.

i HAVE thought about that one, and am going to consult with my PCP

and the psych nurse practioner i have seen about, yes, my anxiety!

however, the way it is worded and all makes me uncomfortable....it

sounds like i am just " anxious " that silicone could harm me, plus, as

i have a master's in counseling, i am all too aware of

being " labeled " in the mental health system....that can affect one's

future in a myriad of ways.....still, i know i may have to play that

card.....thanks again to you and everyone for the support......talk

about anxiety! i will still have to track down a skilled PS!

i know, the first lady and i thought we had it covered with

the " cancer " part, but then the second lady read it with me and said

i STILL had to have a " diagnosis " ....actually, i had cigna at the

time of my mastectomy...when my district changed insurance companies

three years ago, aetna had to accept me.....so they do have to cover

me, if i play the game....i am busily working on that and i so

appreciate all the women who have offered advice and support

here.....thank you...oh, and yes, i had a breast coil MRI six weeks

ago, and they were not leaking then....the radiologist even did a

follow-up ultrasound.....i know silicone leaks, even when they look

intact, and i do so much want them gone....i feel a little hopeful,

even through my pain, that i will find a way now......... :)
