Who would you see at NHS for a Aspergers diagnosis? If you have no other

neurological issues, would you still be sent to a neurologist?

In the states, for someone like my husband, a neurologist is a waste of time.

Jay has no other neurological medical issues. My neurologist friend emailed me

as said he would not feel comfortable AT ALL, making that diagnosis. He'd punted

Jay to a psychiatrist.

My friend said he didn't have the training to tweeze apart is it Aspergers or a

Personality Disorder or whatever?

So..for as much as Autism is hyped as a " medical " issue, a high functioning

adult Aspies will probably see a psychiatrist first, as most neurologist do not

team doctor in the states. I don't even think a GP would bother if it was all

behavioral concerns. It would " get dumped " to the psychiatrist.

Hi Nanci,

In my case I went through my local NHS GP clinic with my

" behavioural " issues. There was a very long waiting list, and what

with me being out of the country a lot of the time, it took 2 years

before I eventually got appointments with a visiting psychiatric

consultant.

I don't know how specialised he was. It took 5 weekly sessions before

I got his report, so he had plenty of chance to go back to his base and

look up my weird symptoms in reference material before deciding to plump

down on Aspergers as the nearest he could get!

Apart from the US/UK difference, I was out in the Stycks and he only

came visiting to my area, so I daresay my consultant had to be a

jack-of-all-trades.

Other notable differences in my case were that I was voluntarily seeking

advice myself, and before the diagnosis I'd never even heard of

Aspergers, so nobody had a clue where we were heading at the start.

And then my consultant's job was only to find out what was supposed to

be wrong with me (if anything). There was no question of him treating

my symptoms or issues. Since getting my diagnosis in 2009, nothing at

all has happened. The report has simply been filed and that's it. No

recommendations, no treatment, nothing.

I guess in the US, it's all very much more specialised, isn't it?

Nanci,In Australia, there are clinical psychologiststhat are used for diagnosis. Many of these sometimes specialise inautistic spectrum conditions. Our Medicare system also supports peoplegetting specialist help once they go to a GP and develop a mental healthplan. The reason why I think psychologists my be used more is dueto the cognitive and relationship issues that Aspergers is a catalyst formanifesting. Lets face it, if we did not have the AS our relationshipissues may not be as profoundly challenged perhaps. There is another thing that causes confusionand that is any comorbid issues that manifest. Those contingent comorbidissues may get more focus than the underlying issue of AS perhaps.Greg dx AS at 53To: aspires-relationships Date: 21/04/2011 02:21 PMSubject: For UK AspiesSent by: aspires-relationships Who would you see at NHS for a Aspergers diagnosis? >>>>I guess in the US, it's all very much more specialised, isn't it?It depends, . In my case, I self-diagnosed; I was seeing a counseling intern for depression, who happened to have some experience with the autistic spectrum; when I needed an official diagnosis in order to get a reduced-fare bus pass, she agreed I met the criteria in the DSM, had her supervising psychologist sign the letter, and I was diagnosed.
