When I applied for SSDI they didn't say I had to be out of work for a year, they said I had to make less than $780 a month. (Thanks for whoever posted the correct amount, I only remembered it was less than $800 because that's what I had made that month). As posted earlier, they have an 800 number, or the forms are on line.

Disability

I have FM, CFS Depression, IBS, and a few others, but my Doctor saysit is a lot of work to get disability. Do I really have to be out ofwork for a year to get it? Working is so hard now with FM but I havebills to pay too. If anyone has any suggestions on applying for ssdi Iwould be very interested. I can hardly walk anymore, so my Dr. gaveme permission to get a temporary disability hang tag for my car butso far he says he dosen't think he can get my insurance to pay for amotorized chair. I just feel so bad and really frustrated when I haveto crawl to the bathroom because I can't stand on my feet.thank you.

Hi Mindi :)

I ran this by my wife, Sherry, as she has worked for SSA for 10 years now. She said you do have to have an expectation of being disabled at least a year in order to file. You don't need to have been out disabled already for a year, just that your physicians' state you will be out longer than a year. There is also a 5 month waiting period before benefits are paid. Likely you will go on SSDI.

I hope this helps. I can ask her any other things people need answers to, as she works for the Hearings and Appeals part of SSA, the next step up from the local office should you need to go before an AL Judge.

(now fully delurked)

Sharon. Hi I'm k and I've been on disability for 20+ years but

originally it was from a spine injury as a result of my work...I'm

an LPN--got thrown accross a bed and landed on a rail, compressing

several vertabrae which surgery finally relieved so I went back to

work 5 weeks after surgery. I revieved disability from work during

that time with out a problem...then 2 years later my back/spine

again had me bed ridden and after surgery I chased Dr. to Dr. trying

to find the relief I'd had previously...but to no avail. That

started a long journey with social security for disability.. 2

years. in the mean time my disability ins. paid me enuf monthly that

we didn't sink into debt but neither did we see any chance of

getting out of our trailor with two kids...one Tina who desparatly

needed a warm home with room. Her immune system had her sick at

least twice a month... no way to get away from all the germs a

closed system like a small trailor harbored. So we hired a lawyer

and....fought the system...and won. But only after a hearing in

front of a judge who ruled in my behalf. With benifits being

retroactive we were able to put a down payment on a new house and my

checks pay the house payment. Tina benifited greatly.. tho there

were still times when my son, Ty had to cancel house sleep overs or

B-day partys because Tina was sick or someone came over with a

cold...a sure pneumonia for Tina if she even got a whiff. Tina had

juvinile rheumatoid arthritis....or maybe even then fibro. Despite

Ty's disappointments as a child he and Tina have a relationship that

is wonderfull and loving at the ages of 22 and 26. The main problem

I have now is ...we built a split foyer....Little did I know then

that the day would come where a flight of stairs looked like Mt.

Everest.....Slowly but surely the downstairs family room and laundry

room became places I didn't see for days at a time... it's two

flights of 8 steps each. I haven't done laundry in years....which I

took badly as I was the one home 24-7 but I have an angel for a

husband who's main convern is my happiness...plus he's become

anexpert at getting out grass stains from slacks...LOL Today I can

dust in instalments which means by the time I've dusted the house

there's dust all over again. LOL I can cook meals and yes, I'm a

great cook---thank you MOM...other than that..dishes...the kitchen

sink is never empty.

Anyway... back to your question.....Back then ..yes it was...

today? Just have a lot of documentation. Keep a diary of your day

from the time you wake up til you go to bed or get up in the

morning. A couple of weeks and even a lay person can draw a

conclusion in your favor.

Smile..........It's easier to stick your tongue out at disbelievers

that way.
