Hello all!

Well, it's me again. Going to pick your brains again. =) A friend of mine called

this eve to tell me that she just received the results of her sons blood work.

He has been not feeling well for the last two weeks, occasionally running a

fever, too. Turns out, that he tested positive for lyme. The family Dr called in

a prescription for her to pick up tomorrow. She wanted to know what I thought he

should be getting. I told her I would think probably about 400mg of doxycycline

for approx. 8 weeks. He is 13 years old. What do you guys think? They have no

idea when he was bit. Also, is that what a regular family Dr would do, or will

she have to go to an LLMD for such a prescription?

As always, thanks so much for being there!

God bless~Malinda

Some regular family doctors will write an appropriate scrip, others won't. It truly depends upon the dr.

You may want to let her know about the yahoo group Lyme Aid Parents. It's for parents of kids that are dx'ed with lyme. There are parents there whose entire families are dx'ed, and some that just have 1 child that have lyme. It's a good resource for parents in addition to other lists because as parents we go through additional emotions with having chronically ill kids and it can help to hear things from the perspective of other parents who have already been through parts of this journey.

Hi Malinda, it all depends on the physician and usually their own believes/opinions. Often times when prescribed doxy or any other abx, docs seem to go for the "recommended" two weeks....

Hopefully the physician your friend is dealing with has the abliity to think outside the box some and give her son more treatment weeks to be, well on the safe side.

All the best and by the by thank you for being a great friend to your friend!

I just got word, the Dr prescribed 200mg Doxy daily for 3 weeks. She said that

is what she always does and has never had a problem. =) I think that is being

skimpy. Shouldn't she at least do 6 weeks and possibly a higher dose? He is 13

years old. No one knows how long ago he actually got bit.

Thanks for the response ~ Malinda

Hi Malinda,If your friend's doc won't give more than 3 weeks, she can get more doxy without scrip from alldaychemist.com. (India. reputable. shipping's steep but item costs are low.) Just don't fill in the doctor page of the order form: it will go through anyway. It would really be nice to know if this is acute (recently bitten) as opposed to chronic,(some time has passed since bite) because abx are really only great for acute.Be well,LénaI just got word, the Dr prescribed 200mg Doxy daily for 3 weeks.
