Guest guest
Hi again Kathy! Rich's success is astounding! I am very happy to hear how well he is doing. Moreso, congratulations to you on taking control of your health. I am sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. My deepest sympathies. Once you have the surgery and commence your weight loss, you will see an immediate improvement in your health, especially your diabetes. I was a raging diabetic for 5 years and was a high risk surgical patient. Sent home 3 times the week of my surgery with a sugar of 500+. They had to pump me full of insulin, keep me overnight and then rush me into surgery the next morning before my sugar went up again. Within a month of surgery I was off ALL diabetic meds! Pre surgery I was on the maximum daily dosage of Glucophage plus Glucotrol XL! The surgery is so worth it and so is your life. Rich is a living example of that! Continued WLS success to Rich. Hope you get a surgery date ASAP! Robyn

Guest guest
Hi Kathy, It's great to have you in the LOSERS group. WELCOME!! Carol, Anaheim Hills, CA Lap RNY 4/2/04 235/140/135 Introduction - Kathy Should have introduced myself. I submitted my profile in the file section but thought I'd write a brief introduction. I'm Kathy (Kathy Lang on OH) age 44. I live in Fairfax, VA (about 15 miles outside of Washington DC). I grew up in Queens, NY (first 25 years) before moving to VA for a job. Been here since. I am employeed by a company that does software. Yes, being in DC area - much of our work is for the government. I work on a contract with Housing & Urban Development (HUD). If you've heard of FHA Mortgages - I work on the computer system that supports them. I just got married (for the second time) on November 22 to Rich. He is 40. My boy toy. ;-) His first marriage. So far, things are great! LOL. He actually grew up in this area. Rich is a traffic reporter (no he isn't in a chopper or plane - I get asked this all the time) and does reports for about 7 different stations during his shift. Stations from Public Radio to Country to Urban R & B to All News. I joined the 'other' list to gleen information for Rich. He had his surgery back on 8/5/2004 (open RNY). Yesterday, he was 4 months post-op and he is down 159 lbs. Yes, 159. I cannot believe it. He started at 437 lbs and is now down to 278. Since I weigh in the 260s he is getting mightly close to me! Ack! I didn't decide to seek the surgery for myself until late September when my mother died. She probably had some kind of cancer but was initially hospitalized for strokes - many of them. Her brain blood flow was severely restricted due to heavy plaque. In her lifetime, she had back problems for decades, diabetes (which she denied - a long story), high blood pressure, coronary artery disease - had triple bypass surgery, thyroid stopped working. She was not proactive with any medical condition and I could tell you stories but I won't. She never had a mammogram and probably never had a Pap test (though maybe when pregnant with my sister and I she did). Unfortunately, I am following in my mother's footsteps. It hurts to say that but... I am diabetic (but I acknowledge it and treat it), I have borderline blood pressure problems so it is treated with meds since I am diabetic, I have back problems (degenerative disk disease - herniated disks), and now sleep apnea. I asked my doctor what do I do to prevent following my mother through all her problems. She told me to have the WLS. So, after much thought... I saw the surgeon last Wednesday. We have one thing to check out beforehand and that is raised calcium levels and parathyroid levels. Once that is figured out, we can get moving on the surgery. I just went for blood tests this past Saturday. Today, I have an appointment with the nutritionist. Tomorrow with the psychologist and Wednesday...I get my CPAP titration done. That's my story.
