I posted an answer and it got lost so apologies if this double

posts..

, I have now taken an extra 10mg, 20 mg total so far

already. I am feeling less shaky finally. This is amazing to

discover just how much stress a little cold can put on us! I am

just starting to feel the beginings of a scratchy throat..I don't

even have a runny nose yet, just a little achiness. I'm hitting the

vitamin C, echinacea, GSE and zinc..I plan to kick this if it is

possible.

Thanks so much for the good advice!

When under extra stress you use cortisol at a faster rate. This is

why you double or in some cases triple the dose, so you can replunish

what you used up. If you are taking 30 mg of cortef, then take

another 30 ALL at once.

A good rule of thumb is better to stess dose and turned out you didn't

need to, than to need to stress dose and not do it.

Well, I did not do that. I normally take 20 mg cortef a day. I

took my usual 10 this morning, then 5 mg 2 hours later and another 5

mg about 30 minutes after that. I am feeling pretty good right now,

and am about to take my usual 5 mg dose.

I figured on doubling today as suggested, so that will be

still another 10 mg this afternoon plus my 4pm dose (5 mg). Why

won't this be a good plan? Do I need a big dose all at once, is

that what you are saying, Chris?

Thanks for your greatly appreciated comments!

Can we determine in what cases stress dosing is appropriate? A cold,

for example, and worse (flu), presumably. What about menstruation?

I got my period yesterday on top of my heavy cold, had crashed by

11am, and had to spend the rest of the day in bed. This in spite of 9

pellets of Isocort (I take the point about it being weaker than

cortef, but it's all I can do right now) - eight of which in the

morning and lunchtime.

And what about if I was in a car crash or something? What would

happen to my poor adrenals then?

Depends on what the stress dose is for. For sickness, you may need

to stress dose for a 2 or three days. Any longer and your end up

suppressing your immune system. I don't recommend stress dosing for a

mild cold. Stress dose if threw up and flu symptoms for sure.

If stress dosing because you overdid cleaning your house, then one day

should be enough.

But if you do this, are you running the risk of suppressing your

adrenals even more and making you even more independent on the steriod?

And do you have to stress dose for vigorous exercise? And is it safe

to do this on a daily basis, or up to 5 times a week? I don't have

the energy and stamina to do more than gentle walking 20-30 minutes

right now, but some day I'd like to get back to my aerobic weight

training workouts.

Deborah, I know, you've gently reminded me of this before! LOL, and

I promise, I've been listening to you and keeping the exercise to

gentle walking. No, my Armour isn't optimized yet, I promise I'm

taking it easy.

I'm just looking ahead to what I hope is a very active and healthy

future. I probably just need to worry about now and do what I know

is best for where I am. Thanks for your wonderful advice and

guidance. I really appreciate all the insight and wisdom you give

on the NTH board.

No, I wasn't saying " you already told me that. " :)

I figured you were ready to smack me because you were

thinking...... " How many times am I going to have to tell this person

this. Does she not get what I'm saying? " LOL

Yes, you are so helpful. I just checked out your forum on the Stop

The Thyroid Madness site. That is going to be one AWESOME website!

It looks like it's already reached some people who aren't in our group.
