Asperger's info

Albert Einstein, Washington and Elvis Presley may have all suffered from Asperger’s syndrome. It is a condition that is classified as an “autism spectrum disorder” that affects people’s ability to understand the give and take of social interaction and communication.

As part of International Day of People with a Disability, North Coast TAFE and Autism Spectrum Australia are having an event at Wollongbar TAFE to introduce the community to the world of Asperger’s and share stories from those who live it.

The keynote speaker is Lawson who is the national disability co-ordination officer and lives with Asperger’s. She will discuss her life, education, and work as a poet, psychologist and adult educator. was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia for over 25 years and grew up feeling isolated, lost, confused and in despair. It was only after being properly diagnosed with Asperger’s that she could put a name to the way she viewed the world around her.

There will also be works from TAFE students and local artists, a Q & A panel, and local lad Curtis on will talk about his experiences with Asperger’s and his school-based traineeship.

The event is called Sharing the Gift and will be held on Wednesday, November 24, from 9.30am to 12.30pm and will be followed by lunch. To register go towww.surveymonkey.com/s/SharingTheGift.
