Congratulations! I am a CLinical Psychologist, had breast cancer 10 years ago, a bi-lateral mastectomy and reconstruction using saline implants. I, too, was diagnosed with MS. I explanted in January and I feel like I have been given my mind back! I would love to chat with you about your MS diagnosis. Again, congrats! Nice to have a mind that works, isn't it?

After deferring the exam for 2 years, during which time I had explant surgery, was in the

hospital 3 times and was diagnosed with MS, Hashimoto's thyroid disease (autoimmune),

lupus, and fibromyalgia....

I took it in July. I PASSED!!!!!!!!!

It DOES get better. I never would have dreamed I could have studied and passed the bar

exam, as sick as I was. I really didn't expect to.

I wanted to chat with you especially about your MS diagnosis. I was diagnosed about 4 years ago. I continued to have difficulty with my left leg and knee. I felt like I had no power in that leg. After an MRI which showed 2 brain lesions, it was suggested that I have MS. I had my implants removed in Jan 2005. Many of my other symptoms have improved. My leg feels stronger, however, I still have a leg brace and walk with a cane. I wondered what your MS symptoms were and hAve they improved since explant?

Just a follow-up. I received my official score today: 863.

It's funny how the stress of a test plays mind games. Based upon practice exams

1 & 2 (762 & 837), I thought I had a reasonable chance of reaching 850. But,

after the exam, I wondered if I even met my minimum goal of 800.

In fact, I really stressed during the first 20-30 minutes of my exam. I remember

thinking I would fail and consoled myself with: " well, at least I can take it

two more times. " That's funny looking back on it (having my final score.).

There are so many unknown variables, it just shows how you can't speculate what

your score will be. I had so many questions I'd never seen in study books, I

thought I might get less than 800. But, it's possible those were only survey

questions (for future exams) and didn't count. My exam also seemed harder, with

more math than I expected. If PTCB scores each question by difficulty (which

their official statements imply, but don't actually say), that would also lead

to a higher score than you'd feel like you're going to get.

For me, I focused on the math. It seemed like much of the material about drugs,

laws, practices would be learned on the job. But, math is math. That was the one

thing I had control over. If I could get very comfortable with the math, that

would be " low-hanging fruit. "

During the exam, I flagged all my math for review. I had about 38 minutes(?)

leftover. I reviewed every math question, solving it once or twice. Reading it

for tricks (practice materials sometimes change mg to g, or total dose to day's

dose). Then had about 12 minutes to review the first 20-30 questions where I was

having a nervous breakdown.

I think leveraging math as the one thing I had total control over helped.

Leveraging the remaining time helped.

Taking practice exams helped too. That gave me an idea that I can do 90

questions in 60-70 minutes. That helped me calm down during the initial part of

the exam, when I thought I would run out of time.

Memorizing drug names seemed like a waste of time (relative to the effort). But,

it's hard to say without knowing whether PTCB scores questions by difficulty. I

hate to encourage anyone not to study more and strive for a higher score. But,

in hindsight, that seemed like a lot of time for little payback. (It might have

even contributed to my stress. I spent a lot of time memorizing drug names,

feeling confident. When I saw something on the exam I'd never seen before, I

panicked.).

OTOH: Memorizing drug names wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. When I

faced learning 50 or 100, I thought it would be impossible. After 3 weeks, I

memorized 300. Looking back, that surprises me. So, I wouldn't let what appears

to be a wall of drudgery prevent you from trying. (Try the 5-year top-200 flash

cards I created with mnemonics, described here:
