FDA breaks its promise to women: act today!

American women have waited more than two years for the FDA to decide whether women can purchase the morning-after pill over the counter. But the FDA announced last week that it would postpone its decision indefinitely, breaking its promise to issue a ruling by September 1st.

Tell the FDA we shouldn't have to wait any longer!

When I heard on last week that the FDA had broken its promise to rule on over-the-counter access to the morning-after pill by September 1st, I was so frustrated. After all, improved access to emergency contraception could reduce the number of unintended pregnancies by half. What is the FDA waiting for? Send a letter.

And shortly after the FDA's announcement, we also learned that Wood, FDA Assistant Commissioner for Women's Health, was so fed up that she resigned her post in protest of the agency's action, saying, "I can no longer serve ... when scientific and clinical evidence, fully evaluated and recommended for approval by professional staff here, has been overruled."

American women have waited more than two years for the FDA to decide whether women can purchase the morning-after pill over-the-counter. The FDA's own experts have said repeatedly that emergency contraception is safe and effective, and should be sold over-the-counter. And, the Bush administration publicly promised the U.S. Senate that the FDA would stop dragging its feet and issue a decision by September 1st in exchange for confirmation of the new FDA Commissioner, Lester Crawford.
