Guest guest
Sorry, I didn't assess the problem entirely correctly. It's not so much that root canals are about promises that don't deliver as about dangers that aren't fully revealed or considered in the long term. Especially for those who are immune system challenged, like us. Patty > > > - > > > > > > Rogene > > > Travelling sounds fun. Where are you going? Dental surgery not > so > > > fun. Guest guest
I have had more root canals than I want to think about. I have had many caps and bridges. It all started when I was about 42. I have a hard time believing that root canals are 'cover ups', because it makes a lot of sense as to why they are needed. > > > - > > > > > > Rogene > > > Travelling sounds fun. Where are you going? Guest guest
Hi Patty, You know I don’t have implants but I do have root canals. I spoke to my DO about reactions to dental work and he believes it is our body’s reaction to the different metals that are used. I had braces at the time and was wondering about any possible reaction I might have to them. I never got sick so the combination of metals in my mouth didn’t bother me. My DO did become deathly ill from dental work in his mouth and ended up having his removed. I don’t know what the holistic dentist used to fill his teeth. Kenda more note about this whole experience and why I was so much on the fence about getting this root canal. Of course, I had read the books by Dr. Hal Hugggins ( " It's All in your Head, and " Uninformed Consent " ) and heard about " Root Canal Cover-Up " , and just really had thought that I would never allow myself to get a root canal. It sounded as bad as breast implants with the promises that didn't deliver. My dentist is a holistic one. He does not do root canals himself. He refers them out to a specialist, and in fact, it was the endodontist that did his root canals for him. What had me on the fence was my dentist's wife. She told me that she had been very, very sick at one time (and they've always been interested in my breast implant work, so I am not sure what connection there is there....) and that after she had her root canals removed, (she had 3 or 4), her health improved greatly. That was a testimony that carried some weight with me. But the idea of tooth implants (if I opted to remove the affected tooth) and shifting or teeth falling out due to spaces from the missing teeth really left me wondering what the best options were. I guess there are none. I just thought the dentist's wife's testimony was worthy of consideration. I guess bottom line is that if the root canals affect my health in negative ways, or my health declines from here, I can always get them out. How many of you have had to suffer through root canals since implants? Patty > Yes, it's true, I just had a root canal. Actually, not one, but two. > I was so torn about this. Guest guest
I agree, I think many of us who are immune system challenged need to be careful about the metals we allow to be put into our mouths. I had my 4 icky silver/mercury amalgams removed--that was one of the first things I did after I started my detox program in 1999. They were replaced with composite resin. Dr. Hal Huggins has suggested a test to see what materials your body is biocompatible with. My holistic dentist did that for my husband. If you are reactive to metals, they can use all porcelain crowns or different kinds of metal free filling materials. I love this...no more ugly silver fillings in the mouth. I think amalgam fillings should be outlawed. They are dangerous and just plain ugly. I remember watching a movie where Brad Pitt had opened up his mouth while lying on the ground in pain. Yup, sure nuf, he had those ugly amalgam fillings in his upper teeth! I can't figure out why the Dental Association just doesn't scrap the whole idea of ugly metal fillings and go with the protective and much prettier white ones!!! Mercury should never be placed in the human body, but they do it without batting an eye. Patty > >>> > > - > >>> > > > >>> > > Rogene > >>> > > Travelling sounds fun. Where are you going? Guest guest
It certainly makes sense as to why they are needed...taking out a nerve that is causing pain will hopefully resolve that pain. That is not the dispute. The dispute or cover up lies in what happens with the bacteria over the long term. Here's a better synopsis of the cover up: http://www.drshankland.com/rootcanal.html INTRODUCTION. For the past 50 years, dentists have saved millions of teeth by performing endodontic therapy, or root canals. Dental students and residents in Endodontics (the speciality in dentistry devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases inside teeth) have been taught to perform various procedures to save injured, dead, and dying teeth. These procedures were taught purely to help the public, with absolutely no other reason. The dental profession succeeded in teaching the value of saving teeth. However, today, there has been some revealing research which may require the dental profession to reconsider conventional ideas about endodontically treated teeth. Today, there are many reputable doctors (dentists, physicians, and PhDs) who are concerned about endodontic therapy and possbile systemic effects on other organs and tissues in the body. It may even astound most dentists that the organisms which may be present in dead teeth may be impossible to irradicate no matter how well the root canal procedure is performed! These organisms are not actually in the canal portion of the tooth, but in the tiny microscopic tubules which comprise the dentin (the material below the enamel which is more organic than enamel) of the tooth. Herein lies the scientific question: does it matter that these organisms remain viable even after endodontic therapy? Researchers on both sides of this heated issue agree that these organisms do stay alive after root canal procedures, but they can't agree whether this is important or not. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Weston Price's Research. Dr. Weston Price, the noted and honored dental researcher of the early part of this century, headed a team of America's finest scientific researchers, numbering 60 doctors. Their research was conducted under the auspices of the American Dental Association (ADA). From their 25 years of study, this research team published 25 scientific papers dealing with the effects of dead or endodontically treated teeth producing other diseases and disorders in remote areas of the body. The research was not only accepted by the scientific community, but served to form an important concept in medicine which is even taught today: the focal theory of infection. Anyone who has a prosthetic joint replacement or a mitral value prolapse will immediately understand this concept, as they cannot undergo any dental procedure without first being treated with certain antibiotics to stop the spread of bacteria from the mouth to remote areas of the body which may produce a fatal infection. Since the advent of antibiotics, dentists and physicians have been taught that the focal theory of infection is erroneous and has no scientific basis. Further, they are taught that there is no modern evidence that endodontically treated teeth are the source of focal infections. However, again, recall that patients with joint replacements and certain heart conditions must take antibiotics before and after any dental procedures. Why? Because the bacteria which live in the mouth enter the blood stream because of the dental procedures and travel to the heart and joints, thus possibily causing severe and often fatal diseases. Now, think about what you've just read: how can any dentist or physician claim that the focal theory of infection has no scientific validity when dentists are required to premedicate their patients to avoid producing a distant or focal infection? --- In , " MollyBloom54 " <jawlaw93@y...> wrote: > I have had more root canals than I want to think about. Guest guest
The way I understand it is that root canals can cover up infections that are smoldering. Then the infection lingers on and on and you can't get down to it to get it eradicated. That is why I am against root canals and would do anything to avoid it, but I am sure there are some incidences where it cannot be avoided. This is something that has to be looked at thoroughly on a case by case basis. Hugs, kathy > > > > - > > > > > > > > Rogene > > > > Travelling sounds fun. Where are you going? Guest guest
Patty Did you use a dentist familar with mercury removal techniques? I need to get several fillings removed. My regular dentist wants to do it but wouldn't use any special precautions. I called someone near chicago and they would use oxygen for $45 extra and charge $175 per one surface filling. But they also require a $175 consult. It is $250 if I want to see what materials would work best in my mouth. I am trying to decide if it is worth it. She said that some people get dramatically better. But others, don't notice a difference one way or another. She also said they would like you to be working with a detox person. Guest guest
My DO wanted me to have my mercury fillings removed as well. He also recommended having a procedure done where they actually file some of your teeth to correct how you bite. I don’t want my teeth filed on but I, too, have considered whether or not to have my mercury removed. I don’t feel like I have any problems with it but who knows? I don’t test as having any mercury toxicity — is that the only way to know if you’d improve? I didn’t get any estimates for cost but was warned that it is pricey because of the extra precautions that need to be taken. I’d love to hear suggestions too. I’d like not to do it but it seems like it might be worthwhile. Kenda Patty Did you use a dentist familar with mercury removal techniques? I need to get several fillings removed. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Yes, we sure did. We have gone only to holistic dentists for about 7 years now. When I had my amalgams removed, I went to a very meticulous holistic dentist that used a rubber dam, oxygen masks on everyone, Vit C IV during removal (but after the anesthesia was administered), and only biocompatible materials for fillings. He was incredible. He was in Tucson. I loved him. Our dentist here in Vegas does not use any metals at all, and he does do the testing to find the appropriate materials for each individual. I did not do that here though, (as I already had my fillings done in Tucson), but Dave did the testing, and got a full page print out of what he could safely use. The dentist also worked with our insurance company to remove all the old fillings by quadrant, so that it was pretty much 100% covered over a period of about 4 years. (My husband had alot more dental work to be redone than me.) We feel it was worth it for us, just to have the peace of mind about being rid of the mercury and having better looking teeth. I was working with a naturopath in Tucson, so I had some help with detoxing, but Dave did not, as his removals were later. We pretty much did things at home with the knowledge that we had gained. However, my removals were done right after explant, and the naturopath was the one that started me using the DMSA chelation agent, after I had done the heavy metals testing and found high mercury and arsenic levels. He prescribed compounded DMSA at a compounding pharmacy. The testing involves more money, but we felt the testing was noteworthy for what it revealed. It is really up to you. I guess if you are hitting roadblocks in your detoxification efforts, this is one area that you might want to pursue just because you haven't yet. It could be one thing that makes a difference. You never know. I only had 4 amalgams to remove, so it wasn't a big deal; however, when I got tested for heavy metals and found that mercury was at a toxic level in me, along with arsenic, I felt that the effort I put forth was worth it. I didn't feel better right away, but I just count it as one more thing I've accomplished in my effort to get well. Mercury is an extremely poisonous substance in the human body....I just didn't want it around anymore, and neither did my husband. When I spent the $1000 on my most recent root canal, I cringed. At first I was just thinking, PULL IT!!!!! But when I thought about the long term, like the next 20 years of my life with that tooth, I thought that over time, the money was probably not a big deal. I was still on the fence about it from a medical standpoint, but I have had a number of people write me privately and say that they are doing fine with their root canals and since my holistic dentist has one too, I decided I am not going to sweat it. Just be glad you don't have to make THAT decision under duress! I was not a happy camper! So, that may be one more way to look at your current dilemma. Yes, it might be a chunk of money. But over the rest of your lifetime, will it be worth it? If it makes you feel even 10% better, would it be worth it? Only you can decide! Guest guest
Kenda, One test you might like to take is to see if your current amalgam fillings are putting out mercury vapors, and how much. My husband did this test, and it was off the charts, even though they were older fillings. Our holistic dentist did this. How to find a mercury fee dentist in your area: http://www.toxicteeth.org/dentistsDoctorsProducts.cfm Here are a few links that discuss mercury vapors and how harmful they can be: http://www.chem-tox.com/immunesystem/dentalfillings/amalgams.htm http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/phs46.html When you breathe in mercury vapors, however, most (about 80%) of the mercury enters your bloodstream directly from your lungs, and then rapidly goes to other parts of your body, including the brain and kidneys. Once in your body, metallic mercury can stay for weeks or months. When metallic mercury enters the brain, it is readily converted to an inorganic form and is " trapped " in the brain for a long time. Metallic mercury in the blood of a pregnant woman can enter her developing child. Most of the metallic mercury will accumulate in your kidneys, but some metallic mercury can also accumulate in the brain. Most of the metallic mercury absorbed into the body eventually leaves in the urine and feces, while smaller amounts leave the body in the exhaled breath. http://www.home.earthlink.net/~berniew1/galv.html While this issue may seem to be relatively benign if you do not test positive for mercury load in your body, you may still be having significant, constant mercury exposure through leaking amalgams. It is a huge controversy right now in the Dental field, with strong opposition on both sides. Definitely something worth learning more about! Guest guest
It was done through MetaMetrix Labs in Norcross, GA, a 24 hour urine colletion test. It sounds nasty, but it was quite simple. My naturopath gave me a collection bottle and a kit that the Lab provided. I collected urine for a 24 hour period (it was very specific about the collection process), then filled a couple tubes with a sample of my urine. The kit came with a DHL mailing package, and I just called the company for a pickup. My results were sent to the doctor and he gave me a copy and we discussed them within a week or so. You could probably call MetaMetrix or visit their website http://www.metametrix.com/AboutUs/ and ask them for a referral to a doctor in your area who offers this testing. Their number is 1-770-446-5483. That is what is listed on my test results, anyway. That was in 1998. Hope this helps you Kathy! Guest guest
Hi Kenda, I just wrote Kathy about it...It was a 24 hour urine collection test, designed to measure what toxic metals my body was dumping. I sent some info earlier on the mercury vapor issue...if you read it, you can see where it has been suggested that the body dumps mercury vapors that collect in the body through the urine and feces, so it seems appropriate to test and see if it is being eliminated. Guest guest
Hi Patty! I’ll check with Dr. Leu to see if I have had the test run, I believe I did when I had braces and he does use Metamatrix tests. We were concerned about metals being dumped then. My hair analysis was great, surprisingly. I am going to call the holistic dentist in my area today. Kenda Hi Kenda, I just wrote Kathy about it...It was a 24 hour urine collection test, designed to measure what toxic metals my body was dumping. I sent some info earlier on the mercury vapor issue...if you read it, you can see where it has been suggested that the body dumps mercury vapors that collect in the body through the urine and feces, so it seems appropriate to test and see if it is being eliminated. Makes sense to me anyway! Paty > >>> > > > >>> > > Patty > >>> > > Did you use a dentist familar with mercury removal techniques? > > I > >>> > > need to get several fillings removed. Guest guest
Yes, Lea, I do have a few. I will have them taken care of soon. Kenda Kenda honey, please tell me that you do not have amalgams and if you do they must be removed. I'm not a dentist, but my oral pathologist removed my amalgams immediately when he saw how sick I was from the implants. He used special equipment when he removed them. I cannot remember what he did because my slate has been wiped clean....memory loss. Love you.....Lea ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~``` Re: On root canals Kenda, One test you might like to take is to see if your current amalgam fillings are putting out mercury vapors, and how much. Guest guest
Hi Patty, I phoned the mercury free dentist from the website you posted yesterday. I have an appointment for 9/28. He does a full exam and x-rays. I’d like to get out of the x-rays but I doubt he’ll let me. I’ll have to call and see if my current dentist’s x-rays will work, they’re nearly a year old. He charges between $130 and $165 per filling, which I didn’t think was too bad. The initial appointment lasts an hour and a half. He recommends reading a book, Uninformed Consent by Hal Huggins before coming in. Thank you for all of the information you sent me and for kicking me into going. Guest guest
Hi Kenda! We just got back from our cabin and I am catching up on posts....glad to hear you are looking into the controversies with dental materials. Dr. Hal Huggins books are interesting reading. Let us know how it goes. I know you will be happier and better off with pretty white fillings instead of the silver ones. I sure was! Guest guest
Hi Patty! Welcome back! I went out looking for the book over the weekend but couldn’t find it in the stores here. The dentist’s office I’m going to carries it so I’ll go buy it today. I looked in my mouth and was happy to see that I only have four amalgams! I was afraid I had many more to have removed. Wednesday is my consult day! Kenda Hi Kenda! We just got back from our cabin and I am catching up on posts....glad to hear you are looking into the controversies with dental materials.
