It's hard enough on the young and resiliant - who have a better chance of making a new start! At their age, unless they are financially secure, it has to be their worst nightmare! It could have been worse, I guess . . . but for the thousand upon thousands of people who have lost everything . . . This is as bad as it gets. Are your inlaws staying with you now? . . . It sounds like you got off pretty easy . . . We can only pray there won't be anymore major storms again this year. I live near Tampa and have many close calls with hurricanes and know the horrible fear of these storms looming muchless dealing with t he aftermath.... it is very scary indeed. Guest guest Posted August 30, 2005 Report Share Posted August 30, 2005 I am so sorry for all the families involved here.... it is soooo very horrifying to have one of these things comig at you not knowing when and where it will hit.... we were there several times last years and were spared any massive damage, thank the Lord, but just the stress and anxiety can be too much..... I remember just crying myself to sleep over Charley last years as it was headed straight for us..... it ended up turning unfortunately for the ones in it's path and only caused minimal damage to our home but I remember my hubby trying to put Logan and I in the car to head to my inlaws in W. VA. I was so scared. I sure hope these families can get to rebuilding their lives as soon as possible and there is the least amount of casualties.... I just wish these people would evacuate when required ... it is sad but saves soooo many more lives.... I also have a lot of family on my dad's side in northern Alabama.... so far they seem OK. Guest guest Posted August 30, 2005 Report Share Posted August 30, 2005 They are able to apply for low cost government emergency loans, but that is about it. The Red Cross will help a lot of people. Everyone could donate, and volunteer time to help. I think we are all feeling overwhelmed with the totality of the disaster. It seems like it gets worse every day. And the gas and sewers are contaminating all the homes and many that are damaged by water may have to be destroyed. I am so glad I do not live anywhere near this disaster. In the Gulf coast area, hurricane insurance is purchased separately . . . and flood insurance is additional. A mortgage holder may require the homeowner carry insurance, but many others will not. I doubt that many people will have the insurance necessary to cover their losses. Hopefully the people of the United States will be generous in their assistance. I had heard that some people didn’t have flood or earthquake coverage in some areas so I’m not surprised but am disheartened. The loss is much more than I even imagined. Many, however, did not have any insurance of any kind. The US government will declare this whole area a disaster area and make it eligible for very low cost loans. That will help some. God only knows what will help many of these poor people. May He be merciful. If they can connect the water, food and shelter to those who need it. However, the long term needs are going to be incredible. . . Just the needs of the families who evacuated the area . . . unless they have friends or family to stay with, they are spending money at an alarming rate with no end in sight, not knowing what they have to go home to and no job where they are staying. I know the services will be of some assistence to these people, long term . . . ??? I think a lot of people are going to begin understanding what millions of other people in other war-torn, famine ravaged countries have been enduring for years. Guest guest Posted August 31, 2005 Report Share Posted August 31, 2005 I agree Living in the gulf area myself in Florida, when you get homeowners you either pay separate for "optional" hurricane or you have a massive deductible.... we went w/ the deductible. A lot of these people probably opted out as the premiums are soooo high - especially there where you are actually below sea level, they can't afford it. Our homeowners is ridiculously high and went up after last year w/ all the hurricanes that hit Florida. It is sad that they do that.... collect you money for years and years and the first bad year the have they slam it to you with outrageous premiums but you really have no choice.... you have to have the insurance unless you own your home outright which is pretty tough these days w/ property values being what they are.... especially here in Florida - they have skyrocketed. My Taxes have gone up almost $1000/year since we bought this home in 1/03. This all is so very sad for these people.... I watched a segment on the local news yesterday that was explaining what would have happened had this storm turned and hit just north of Tampa bay.... all of downtown as well as all the gulf communities would be under water - who even knows if we would have made it even though we are a little more inland as we are very close to the Hillsborough river which connects to the bay. After Charley the river overflowed and reached less than a mile from our home and flooded several communities... We didn't even take a direct hit on that one. It is very scary indeed.
