Hello everyone,

I'm looking for any good websites or cookbooks for low sodium and pre-

diabetic diets. It's not so much that I can't find any recipe

information out there, it's more of a there's so much information out

there regarding diets. I was hoping that someone in the group already

maybe has some favorite recipe website or cookbook that they've found

and why they like it. Also, if anyone has any recomendations on reading

material regarding maintaining a healthy lifestyle and coping with

cirrhosis.

I've been finding out that there's alot more to living with cirrhosis

then just making the Dr's appointments and abstaining from alcahol. So

I figure it's time for me to try and make the time I have left as long

and as healthy as possible, so if anyone has any good reads I'd

appreaciate it. Thanks in advance.

I can count the years since eating certain foods. I will swell up short term any

time I deviate from my low sodium diet. I meant to answer this person's

(realise's) post, but now I cant find it. So here are my answers.

I will eat a simple meal of steamed vegetables, and broiled fish on a bed of

white rice. Brown rice would help the lactulose, but sometimes we don't need any

help. Any protien always causes me problems. Tonight I had Chili with a

smattering of steak in it. Meat is now a garnish. All meat. My staples are

Canadian granola which has dried fruit in it. Bananas. Coffee coffee coffee. Did

I mention coffee? Nachos where you use salt free tortilla chips, measured colby

cheese, measured meat, completely measured diced pickled jalapenos. Normally a

hepatologist would cringe, and say NO NO!! No pickles!! But I have proven to

myself that sodium restriction does not mean zero sodium. Sometimes a pickle is

a necessity .The only time I would ever actually use salt is for eating a fried

egg. I ate one. A year ago. I keep open the option of eating one whenever I feel

like it. I just mostly choose healthier options.

A low sodium gazpacho can be made with little effort by pouring a small can of

low sodium V8 into a bowl.

Add a table spoon of the following- chopped green pepper, chopped onion,

chopped red onion, chopped celery, chopped cucumbers, and chopped cherry

tomatoes. stir in a tsp of mrs dash and Add a garnish of avocado, if your liver

can take some fat. If I am having a liver ache, I skip the avocado.

It is almost time for Chinese new years. You can use spray pam on to a skillet

with an ounce or two of diced chicken, saute, and add a couple of table spoons

of peanuts, some crushed red pepper and add crushed ginger, and garlic, and

scallions chopped, two tablespoons (240mg sodium per two tbsp) of IRON CHEF

GENERAL TSAO'S CHICKEN sauce to splash on and you have kung pao chicken. The way

I do it is to skip other sodium foods that day. Then I put 4 tabelspoons of

sauce on my kung pao chicken. OOOOOOWEE! is it good!! I could make the sauce

from scratch, and make it even lower sodium, but my original recipe called for 3

table spoons of cream cherry to substitute a chinese cooking wine called

Shaoxing. I stopped cooking with alcohol after detox for my alcoholism.

But this new recipe is the BOMB!

Kung pao chicken in and of itself makes life worth living.

Salt substitutes or sodium free have a lot of potassium in it and is

not good for liver patients.

Ed's doctors told him the same thing. We use Mrs.Dash. He has to watch his

sodium levels.....at times they are too low.  Ed just wants to scream.... he'll

say, " he told me not to use salt and now I have LOW sodium levels! "   He feels

like he can't win....buut he still follows his docs orders.

Jan - When we worked closely with the nutritionist at the transplant

center - she cautioned us NEVER to use salt substitute - that it was

worse than salt. We use Mrs. Dash products - no salt or MSG and great

flavor! And lots of lemon juice in place of salt in vegetables, with

fish or chicken.

After Abijann mentioned that, I remembered I had heard that before. But, my

doctors have me on potassium/Vitamin K because I take medications which

strip the body of potassium.

I have a question. Do most of you take a multivitamin every day? I was

told to do so years ago, and then have had other supplements added over the

years because there aren't enough of them in the multis. I also buy the

men's vitamins so I don't get the extra iron in the women's multis. For a

while, my iron levels were too high. Will get the results of my last tests

on Friday, so will look very closely at them. I am considering making a

spread sheet of my blood tests and maybe connecting it to a graph to show

how they vary. Has anyone done this? Jan H
