Guest guest
I'm sure how relevant to ACT this is, But I was thinking to myself the other day how insane the world is (in terms of war, crime ..etc) and how preventable much of the suffering in the world is. I was thinking to myself, is it so ridiculous to think of a world without violence between people and a world where everyone gets on with each other. (you may say that I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one) It seems so simple for people to just be nice to each other and puzzling as to why there is such aggression in the world. Then I thought of a Mahatma Gandhi quote " be the change you want to see in the world " that I had heard ages ago and it really made sense to me. I can't change the world but I can change myself. So if I want the world to be nice to me then the only thing i can control is how I treat myself - so be nice to myself (be the change you want to see in the world) This idea has given me warm feelings over the last week. Anyway enough of my random thoughts and waffling. Peace out, Andy
Guest guest
For me being nice to myself is not always easy as there is this feeling that I need to change this and that first before I can be good to myself. But what if I come to terms with my dreaded parts and accept them, i.e, they're not be my best parts but they aren't really that bad either. Then I find I am much more tollerant of other people's shortcomings because I can understand the frustration they are going through and that they don't want to be like this either -at least not for long. Accepting your less your dark side is what Carl Jung called individuation i.e. becoming a complete person. Parodoxically, accepting our less than perfect side makes us a much nicer person because we become more forgiving of other people's faults too. Accepting the lesser parts of myself, i.e, greed, selfishness, and all that stuff, etc, leads to a lot of strengh because I have removed my akilies heal and people can't make me feel so bad. Accepting doesn't mean mean I can do as I please, far from it, it just means seeing these thoughts and feelings within and not hating them.
