Dana,

From what I understand, (and if I get it wrong, someone please jump in)

APCO will help represent you in legislative and regulatory matters, but not

legal ones.

As far as the legal representation for labor, all it takes is someone

getting the gumption enough to start the ball rolling in putting together

something similar to CLEAT. Unfortunately, I don't have that gumption.

o get an idea of what CLEAT provides for officers, I've added their web site

below. They are at the state level.

I am fairly new to this list. I was wondering...

Are there any associations that represent dispatchers, for example,

CLEAT, here in TX

is an association that represents Law Enforcement Officers and attaches

to larger

department unions. They have legal representation....There is a monthly

fee to be

a member.

Well, I have dispatched for approx 15 years and have never heard of

anything besides

APCO, and that is only recently.

At our agency, dispatchers (and corrections officers)

are allowed to become associate members of the FOP.

The legal representation rider to the membership is

just a few dollars more a month in dues, and I have

it.

Sara is correct, we have both FOP and PBA (Police Benevolent Assn), and both

are open to dispatchers. I can't remember what state you are in, Dana, but

the Southern States PBA covers AL, AR, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA, and

WV. Best way to reach them is

http://www.sspba.org

If you are in a state other than one of these, they might be able to hook

you up with the PBA for your state. I am not a member of FOP, but I am a

proud member of PBA, and a big booster of them.

Dana,

Do you have a union? They should be able to deal with the issues that

you mentioned. If not you might want to look into what union's are

available in your area. We have Fraternal Order of Police. I know that

they have legal reps available to us and one rep that works directly with us

during negotiations and for any questions about our contract. Even though

we are civilian employees, the FOP will represent anyone within a law

enforcement agency, if janitors want FOP representation they can get it. We

also have a separate contract from other divisions since we have our own

issues.

With in my Department we had a POA(police officers assoc) of which

dispatchers and clerical staff belonged.

This POA belonged to a state wide association. The state wide assoc.

provided legal assistance for in house, legal problems. IE: disputes

between member and staff/city supervisors. Say an officer or dispatcher

made an error resulting in suspension. They would come in to provide

legal assistance. Civil legal problems, those out side the agency, they

would not help except with advice.

On their part alone, not allowing a Trainer Document, Comment on

trainees etc. YES keep your own Comment File. I did it in the Army, as

a Senior Non Commissioned Officer, I was often faced with young Officers

who knew the Sun sat and rose on their whims. Whenever something would

come up that I knew was wrong, even though I had to do his bidding, I

kept a " Memo For The Record " . Show Date, Time, Who said what, signed my

myself and filed away. I carried this habit into my Dispatcher work as

well. Many times it took my back side off the burner and pointed to the

real dummy in the crowd.

Just a thought here, but even if you " can't " document for official purposes, I

would

be documenting like crazy for my own private file! At least, if that dreaded

time

comes when you have to explain why or who or when, you can easily pull out your

personal file...and back up what you say. Noone can prevent you from documenting

in

something as simple as a personal journal, your day to day experiences.
