I didn't go into the other issue on FB because not enveryone on it knows about his cirrhosis....We try to keep it that way.. You know how it is. LOL ! Subject: Ed's colonoscopy To: " Cirrhosis forum " <livercirrhosissupport > Date: Thursday, September 10, 2009, 9:59 AM Well, yesterday Ed had a colonoscopy. the Gastroenterologist found rectal varices. Ed has esoughageal varices, but we'd never heard of this. The doc said it's also a side effect of cirrhosis. I swear....it' s always something. This gastro doc is running scared of Ed's platelet count- 55,000....so he's not going to deal with them. He's faxing everything up to Ed's specialist,Dr. at The Cleveland Clinic....so we'll be making a trip up there. Have any of you ever heard of rectal varices? Guest guest
This post is rated EWWWWW, so if you are squeemish, please do not read. I have heard of them. I had them, or at least I think I did, because I had an enormous amount of bleeding before I stopped drinking. One of the major signs of hope for me is that these have all gone away, or at least they havent bled. Rectal varicies are not like simple hemeroids, and are up in the rectum a bit higher. They look just like esophageal varicies. I have heard the term used interchangably between hemmoroids and rectal varicies, but I believe it is incorrctly used a lot. . The cause is portal hypertension, the portal vein drains blood from the guts back through the liver and is suposed to go back toward the heart, but in the case of scarring, the blood gets slowed down, and the veins get too much back pressure. Rated EWWWW in the next lines, IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, TURN BACK NOW- before I stopped drinking, there were many many times I had a bowel movement, and thought I was passing feces, but when I wiped, it had only been blood in large amounts. The bowl was full of blood. I never told a soul. I was embarrased, and thought it was just bleeding hemoroids , which you hear about all the time, but this was serious bleeding, and I know that there were days I lost over a half a pint of blood. I have not had colonscopy, mostly because I had a serious condition called pneumatosis coli two summers ago, where bubbles developed between the outside and inside wall of my entire colon, and I might have lost it. I sure would have hated that. I dont know how sober I could had stayed if I had to live with a colonostomy. Can they band these for him? Guest guest
Wow, Bobby, thanks for the info. Much appreciated. I'm not really glad you've had these, but I am glad you could tell me about them. Can they band them? I asked the gastro doc that question and he gave me this look and raised his shoulders and talked about Ed's platelet count! Then said he's faxing everything to Cleveland Clinic....so I'm thinking Ed's specialist there will deal with them....will keep you posted. Love,Jill We don't remember days, we remember moments. Guest guest
Yes Jill, Terry had a few, but never had to have anything done with one of them. They leaked a couple of different times and we did nothing because there was so little blood that we thought it was just his hemmoroids. Then, one morning there was just a good amount of blood in the toilet. I took him in to see our PCP, who called the gastro who asked him to send Terry to the ER. We went into the ER, was met by the gastro, who performed a scope that afternoon and found the varices. The one that had bled had already stopped bleeding at that point. He opted to do nothing for the same reason as Ed, platelet count was so bad. He kept Terry overnight and released him the next morning. Terry did have a few other 'flares', but nothing ever developed that was serious. When he died, well let's just say those varices will play a role at death if they never do in life. I am praying for Ed's visit to the specialist and praying he can offer some help. Warm Hugs........... Guest guest
Absolutely Jill. Since I have also now been diagnosed with cirrhosis, I have had people who attended our former church actually come to me and tell me I should really just admit that Terry and I did a LOT more drinking than we had ever admitted to! I just told her she needed to do some research and learn more about cirrhosis and it's causes before she went around making accusations about people! I also told her that, IF Terry and I did have cirrhosis from alcoholism, we certainly didn't do anything worse than she, who has lived her entire life judging others before she had all the facts!!! I'm so happy they were able to remove the polyp and pray that alone will give Ed some relief. Warm Hugs........... Guest guest
Bobby - I have had a terrible day, non health related, and you have me laughing out loud. I am going to save this post and if I start going down later in the day, I am going to re read it. Also, the information was informative since I have bleeding hemoroids. Was wondering if they were same until you explained. Actually, there are only two lines to read if I need to laugh. Do you actually say ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww too, or only use it here. I can't imagine hearing it come out of your mouth. Guest guest
Diane - I might print out your post to take to a lady at our church who let me know she thinks I am a hypochondriac, engaged in a continuous pity party, fooled by my best friend, did a terrible thing which really hurt another friend, and don't like her because she used to be Catholic, and claims she still is, just doesn't like the church here, so comes to our Lutheran Church. wants more control of things than the pastor and anyone else and accused me of being controlling. She had me really down today, her husband has another friend hurt to the core when he told the friend how he should live his life. And, she is a good christian, not going to tell anybody at church what she thinks, just everybody around where they all live. It reallly threw me for a couple of hours, but getting over it now. Guest guest
Diane. I am feeling fine now, it was just such a shock to start with. What helped first was Bobby's post with all the ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww s in it. Before I read the info, I was laughing out loud. Isn't it amazing what this group is good for. Thanks to both you and Bobby for the help. When I first told people I had cirrhosis, their first reaction was, but you don't drink do you? I keep telling them that highest group of patients today aren't alcoholics, but people with hep c and that there are some people who don't know what caused theirs. But I don't think most people will ever get it out of their heads that cirrhosis is caused by alcoholism. I had an im from a nurse friend tonight whose husband is a recovering alcoholic, drank for many many years until she told him to quit or get out. He chose to quit. Now he has a gfr which is a kidney function ratio of 68. She contacted me to give her info which is really funny since she is always telling me how to take care of myself. 60 is considered acceptable, but she is all worried because his is 68. she said all his liver functions tests came out fine which surprised her because of his drinking. So, then I told her that only a small percentage of alcoholics develop cirrhosis. The low level of information out there is amazing even for a nurse. Guest guest
I'll tell you one thing for sure, dealing with this disease has taught me never to pass judgment on people and their ailments. I thought I had already learned that over the years, but realized when Terry was diagnosed with cirrhosis just how much I still had to learn. I am so thankful the Lord has allowed me the opportunity to know these things and hopefully to help someone along the way. Warm Hugs........... Guest guest
I think they want to think they are better because they feel so much LESS THAN. Does that make sense? I have found that people who are so ugly and mean spirited are really just very hurt inside and need love and understanding the most. That being said, I will not just lie down and be a doormat for anyone. You're right Phyllis, it is sad! Warm Hugs........... Who cares how this happened, not sure why it is so important to others, does it make them better, safer, saner? sad sad sad! e ____________ _________ _________ __ From: diane chandler <dianechandler@ att.net> To: livercirrhosissuppo rtyahoogroups (DOT) com Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2009 1:21:21 PM Subject: Re: Ed's colonoscopy Absolutely Jill. Warm Hugs........ ...
