That's why most departments don't pursue on traffic charges ... and why

departments limit pursuits with department policy. I can't say for other

states, but here in Florida, what the statutes say you can pursue is pretty

liberal. It's up to the departments to set their policy, not only to reduce

their liability but also to try to prevent innocent people from dying.

How the pursuit ends depends on the officer's maturity, common sense and

knowledge of procedures. Sometimes it just isn't worth it to pursue. Some

officers are stupid enough to pursue no matter what. Hopefully their

supervisor, removed from the heat of the moment, will have the sense to call

off pursuits that are unwarranted.

Just remember that if there was no crime being committed, there wouldn't be

a pursuit in the first place. And most traffic infractions aren't criminal

offenses!
