Social Worker vs. TFC

Hello all:

I am meeting with the Transplant Social Workers within my department tomorrow to enlist additional support for our TFC and I need your help ASAP

Presently, we have one TFC without the possibility of budgeting for another during the next fiscal year. The one TFC is responsible for kidney, liver, pancreas and heart. She does all of the evals, majority of verifications, RX coverage benefits, and the authorization for patient listing. Needless to say she has JOB SECURITY during this recession.

On a serious note I would like to know who is responsible for assisting with RX benefits and insurance issues and concerns during the post phase. It is not possible for this one person to be pre/post for the remainder of the patient's life and to assist each time a patient loses medical or prescription benefits.

I would appreciate some hard facts to present to the Social Workers to support them assisting the LONE TFC (that's what I call her) like the LONE RANGER only she doesn't have TONTO or Silver!

Please let me know how much financial support is provided by the Transplant Social Workers and if you can how the work is divided between the TFC and SW.

Thanks in advance for your assistance with this matter.

Hi Bessie

Here at LSUHSC I handles

everything that requires insurance verification and Rx drug coverage however once

a patient is transplanted the social worker takes over anything that the

patients needs help with such as Rx drugs co-pays, patient assistance program,

helping patients fill out applications for any types of assistance that they

mght need.

Bessie,

Here at UCI I have been the sole TFC since Jane retired in June of 2008. We have now (finally) added a temp to assist me. We deal with Kidney and

pancreas only. As the TFCs we do all insurance authorizations for pre and post patients regarding treatment and follow up. We are lucky enough to have and awesome post-tx Nurse who understands insurance coverage and does RX pre-auth requests for her patients.

She is really sharp! I assist her with verification of patient's RX benefits and other coverage options.

Our S.W. is also available to assist the patient with funding options for RX.

I hope that is helpful :)

Bessie,

At the University of Utah the TFC's do all of the pre transplant authorizations. Once the patient has been transplanted, the Social Workers take care of everything. We all work together and assist as we are able, but the pre-transplant work load is too chaotic for one person. Good luck to your Lone TFC.

Hi Bessie!

I am sorry this response is so late.

I feel your " Lone TFC's " pain. I am a lone TFC as well, but with

just Kidney & panc. I can't imagine adding more organs with just me

as I also work all of the pre billing in house and for out lying

facilities.

Anyway,I do all pre ins and Rx work. As far as post, I keep post

ins up to date to help the MSW with her part of post Rx. So our MSW

does all the work with PAP's and helps patients in getting their

post tx meds. BUT there is a fine line between our jobs as far as

post. I have a better grasp on Medicare B vs D so I help with that

part.

I hope that makes sense and helps.

Feel free to call or email.
