The only thing that I write down and that I allow trainees to , is requests. There is nothing in our currend CAD that flags units that have requests typed into their call, so there is nothing but our memory to rely on. So I have an organized system and that is all I write down.. Keep telling folks about that double work and missing stuff while youare writing and falling behind.. It also " requires " a location, which can be typed just about anyway you want it, because that particular " location " field - in inquiry requests - does not Geo-validate. <grin> So, the return comes back with a header indicating the requester and a location. Since anything can be typed in that field, folks at the service desk often indicate the CAD log number associated with the inquiry. (See, they don't necessarily know what unit will be assigned, so they type " CAD " for the unit, and then indicate the CAD Log number. After all, they could have several requests entered, pending and returned within a very few minutes, so " CAD " isn't gonna help much as a reference. The log number in that " location " field will let 'em know which situation/CAD log needs the return appended to it.) I've watched the dispatchers type XX in that " location " field - for brevity's sake, I guess - instead of a location or CAD log number, then smiled to myself as they flip through stuff trying to remember why they ran that inquiry and for whom. .....so we still don't NEED a pen and paper unless we're not using our CAD fields and functions for the purposes they are intended. Obviously, everybody's CAD system isn't the same. This may be a cool feature in ours, but there are other features in OTHER CAD systems we drool over, wistfully. Happy to be here, proud to serve.
