Cops Kill Bicyclist on S.F. Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California Highway Patrol officers who stopped a man

bicycling illegally on the Bay Bridge shot and killed the cyclist when he

pulled a gun and fired at them, authorities said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was carrying two small handguns

and a sawed-off shotgun, Oakland police officer said. He also

had cellophane wrap around his body and one leg.

Traffic on the bridge between San Francisco and Oakland was bumper-to-bumper

Thursday for about seven hours after the noontime shooting.

Two officers told the man it was against the law to ride a bike on the bridge

and offered him a ride, CHP spokesman Chase said.

``As they're talking to him, he gets agitated,'' Chase said. ``He throws off

his jacket, reaches into his waistband and pulls out a gun. At that point, he

started raising it at the officers.''

The suspect and both officers fired but it was unclear who shot first, Chase

said.

" Fallout " from this event has been predictable. To begin with, the entire upper

deck of the bridge was closed to traffic for several hours.

Commuters in CA have short fuses and could care LESS why their commute gets

mucked up, by the way. Traffic congestion is more important to many folks than

processing a crime scene. Add the relatively mild appearance of " bicyclist " to

the equation (bicycles ease congestion, are a handy, non-polluting method of

transportation, impart a sense of healthy lifestyle) and tempers ran pretty high

for some time. Probably will continue to do so....

Of course, the media didn't tell everyone: " Peace officers fatally shoot armed

subject. " Noooooo, " Cops kill bicyclist. "

Ain't it the truth?! I guess it doesn't matter if the bicyclist was a

heavily armed maniacal homicidal psychopath. The main thing's to deceive

the public with headlines and make the officers look bad.
