AN INTERVIEW WITH DRS. RICHARD AND KARILEE SHAMES ON THEIR NEW BOOK=====================================More than 30 million people in the U.S. are facing a wide range of symptoms -- everything from weight gain, to fuzzy thinking and brain fog, to panic attacks and depression. So many practitioners and patients overlook the connections between these symptoms and the hormone-related metabolic problems underlying them. Now, Harvard-trained physician Shames, MD, and his wife and co-author, holistic health expert Karilee Shames, PhD, RN, have released their new book Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, or Frazzled? -- published this week by Hudson Street Press -- as a guide to restoring hormonal balance. I had an opportunity read an advance review copy of the book, and now that the book is being published, I'm pleased to bring you this interview with the authors.http://thyroid.about.com/od/drsrichkarileeshames/a/feelingfffbook.htm=====================================FEELING FAT, FUZZY, OR FRAZZLED? MY BOOK REVIEW =====================================It's not always easy for thyroid patients -- and our practitioners -- to understand how interrelated our hormones can be, along with their critical impact on health. Specifically, when we have a thyroid condition, the relationship to adrenal problems and our reproductive system and hormones, is critical, but it's so rarely addressed. This makes Drs. and Karilee Shames' new book, "Feeling Fat, Fuzzy or Frazzled?" particularly useful.Using their unique "Endo-Type" categorization system, you use questionnaires and self-tests to determine which glands -- your thyroid, adrenals or reproductive glands -- are causing your primary imbalance. Then, the book helps you restore balance, help rebalance the glands, and ensure that all three types of hormones -- the 3 legs of the "stool" metaphor that the Shames use in the book -- are all equal, and therefore able to support you without tipping over. The Shames recommend readers find a great practitioner and partner with him or her for your health care. And they dedicate an entire section of book to direct communications with practitioners -- letters you can copy and share with your practitioners or endocrinologists, and will hopefully help you get the care you need. Ideally, you'll find a great practitioner who can help you implement the program with the guidance of the Shames book. But if you need to follow a self-guided program, you will find the resources and information -- including options on where to order your own tests, and what supplements and nutrients you may need -- to pursue a self-care program. And another helpful option is that you can contact Dr. Shames for a phone coaching session to help customize the program to meet your specific needs.Short-term and longer-term approaches are offered, which is especially useful when you are talking about hormones. You'll have things you can do right away, along with longer-term goals and objectives that will help you maintain improvements in your health. Concept Summaries and Action Summaries at the end of each chapter help you focus your efforts on those practical actions that can have the greatest impact on your health.Overall, Drs. and Karilee Shames have achieved the near impossible - a clear, comprehensive, practical and integrated roadmap to restore and rebalance our hormones. I highly recommend the book!If you want to pick up a copy of Fat, Fuzzy, Frazzled? hit your local bookstores, or surf right now over to Amazon.com, where they're giving you a 34% discount off the book's list price of $24.95,. The results of the Birmingham Elderly Thyroid Study (BETS) were presented at the British Endocrine Societies April 2005 meeting. The study, which looked at nearly 6000 people over 65 who had no history of thyroid problems, measured thyroid function, finding that 2.2% had some evidence of a mildly overactive thyroid condition, even though they had no symptoms. This situation is known as subclinical hyperthyroidism. The Starling Review touches on history of thyroid disease, and some interesting findings regarding linkages to cardiovascular problems -- especially atrial fibrillation. The issue of whether or not thyroid hormone replacement causes osteoporosis is also examined. New information on the linkage between thyroid disease and cancer risks is discussed. And, the impact of thyroid hormones on the neurological system, in particular, during pregnancy, is overviewed, and recommendations summarized.Click here to download a free 2-page PDF report on the Starling Review.http://www.thyroid-info.com/starling.pdf=====================================THYROID TOP DOCTORS UPDATED -- HUNDREDS OF DOCS ADDED=====================================The Thyroid Top Doctors Directory has just been updated this week. Hundreds of new doctors in states around the U.S. and countries around the world have been added. If you're looking for a doctor in your area, it's time to revisit the Directory. Also, note that some have been removed from the list. Doctors are removed because they retire, move, die, request to be removed, or when I receive enough patient concerns to outweigh the recommendations. So you may want to check and see if your doctor is on the list, off the list, or if there's another doctor you might want to make your partner in wellness!! GENES MIGHT TELL THE TALE=====================================New research suggests that physicians can distinguish between a type of thyroid cancer and an identical-looking, non-cancerous thyroid condition by simply determining the activity of three genes. The findings could lead to a test that will prevent the needless loss of the thyroid gland in people with the noncancerous condition.http://thyroid.about.com/b/a/174495.htm=====================================THYROID DIET STARTUP PACKAGE=====================================Jump into the Thyroid Diet program with various supplements I've discussed in the book that I take, and that have helped me and many others as part of a successful weight loss program. How can I make a difference? I found out, after hosting British actress and television personality -- and a dear friend -- Isabel Losada here in the U.S. during her tour to promote her newest book, A Beginner's Guide to Changing the World: A True Life Adventure Story. The release of Isabel's book celebrates the 70th birthday of the Dalai Lama, whose teachings inspired Losada's quest. One of Isabel's guiding principles is "Think globally, act joyfully!" And if you met her, you'd know that this is truly how she lives, works, AND writes. The book fulfills this mission, serving as a jumping off point for anyone who wonders how to make a difference, or have an impact in today's world.Isabel, who sometimes describes herself as a bit "Bridget Meets !" was shocked by the lack of international publicity for the plight of Tibet,. She ended up founding a movement, became an international activist, and traveling through England, India, Nepal, and Tibet in her own exploration of Buddhism, Tibet-China relations, and the Dalai Lama's teachings. She's hilarious, moving, and never preachy as she goes from falling for a Tibetan Monk and having tea with the Chinese ambassador to a stunning PR coup in Trafalgar Square (involving a parachute jump off 's Column). For the intrepid Isabel, the story ends with her meeting the Dalai Lama in person and asking, "What difference can one person make?" For the newly inspired readers, myself included, the quest to make a difference is just beginning. It's an amazing book, and I promise you, you will enjoy getting to know Isabel through this amazing book.
