Ethics Commissioner Holds Firm on Saline Implant Prizes

We're passing along this warning to our plastic surgery colleagues

in British Columbia:

Doctors are being warned by the B.C. College of Physicians not to

perform breast implant surgery on women who win the saline pouches

in nightclub contests.

Penticton's Element Nightclub is going ahead with its Sextreme

Makeover giveaway this Saturday. But Dr. Seland, a deputy

registrar and ethics commissioner of the B.C. College of Physicians

and Surgeons, said any doctor who gives the winner implants will

face penalties designed to stop such competitions.

But it's not clear whether any surgeons will get busted. After the

uproar over a similar event last year, contest planners dropped the

breast augmentation award and went natural, with prizes including a

personal trainer, diet gourmet meals, and a life coach.

That's all well and good, but we're especially tickled by one of Dr.

Seland's comments:

" We don't want a woman's judgment to be coloured or clouded by other

factors, such as free and easy access. That clouds the consent

process and people tend not to pay attention to the cons. "

It's not often you see a doctor come out against free and easy

access, but Canada's an unusual place.
