Guest guest
Hi, I'm actually new to the group - lurking around reading but not commenting yet. As way of intro, I have been married to my AS husband for 26 years and counting. I also have an AS son, 12. As to the food issues - when my son was an infant, he showed very severe signs of autism - banging his head, withdrawing, etc. I was very concerned. Long story short, we finally had one of those aha moments. My husband had had wheat allergies when he was little, and I realized that all of the issues started after he started eating wheat in the form of crackers. He had been a very sweet, very calm baby before that time. We took him off all gluten and he immediately improved. I got my sweet little boy back. That was over 10 years ago. We maintain a gluten free diet (although I have heard caesin free is also good) since then for my husband and that one son. Yes, they are both AS, but my son is not full blown autistic and I know it is because of the gluten. Occassionally we have made a mistake and my son inadvertantly gets some gluten. Our first indicator is his mood. It affects him intestinally as well, but his mind more. As for finding products. That depends where you live. In the United States there is an increased awareness of gluten free (GF) needs and more and more products are available. (You also get good at reading labels and recognizing where it hides.) Some good cook books can be found by Carol Fenster, some of her recipes are premixed in Bob's Red Mill packages like her flour mix, bread mix (not bad for GF bread), brownie mix (awesome), etc. Also, I think it is Betty Crocker now has GF baking mixes (the brownies are cheaper than Bob's Red Mill and tastier). Bottom line is you need to make more of your own stuff. When you control it you know what you are getting. If you have a favorite food, email me privately because we have developed or discovered a lot of recipes and might have something to share. Good luck, Ellen > > I don't recall if this has been discussed on here before. Do any the AS population on here deal with intestinal issues? I understand it is common with AS children. Guest guest
LOL no... I actually sent an e-mail full of info and links and relevent comments.... auurrrgh. Guest guest
Trying again: Hi, I don't know if it (food allergies) is AS related, I guess the jury is out on the technicality of that, but I am on a gluten, dairy, and sugar free diet. I have pretty severe food allergies and ran myself into the ground before figuring it out. Looking back over my life and can see they affected me as a child, just no one knew. Gluten products, mainly wheat make me very 'stupid' for example. Slows my brain WAY down, I feel mentally exhausted. Since going off all the foods I am allergic too I no longer spend all my time in the bathroom, for the first time in my life I know what it is to have a CLEAR head before it was like constantly being in a fog, no more constant sore throat, no more itching skin.... Because of all that being gone I FEEL a lot better, more cheerful, happy, and thus more patient, calmer, more easily able to monitor myself and also easier to socialize. (By that I mean easier to put up with the extra input that comes with socializing.) So yes, I would have to say this has made a significant difference in my outlook and my functionality level. I have found Trader Joes http://www.traderjoes.com/ to be a good source for rice pasta. Most of my products I get at a local store called Lingonberries http://www.lingonberriesmarket.com/. But also go to Whole Foods and Fred Meyers. I am looking into http://www.azurestandard.com/ I've heard a lot of good about them from others with similar issues. The thing with them is you have to either need a LOT of stuff yourself or band together with others. I believe minimum purchase is 400. Most people find family, friends, neighbor's etc. and everyone orders at once to make it workable. The good side is you can order online and they will deliver to you, then the others you worked with can pick it up from your place (or whatever place you choose to have it dropped at) Affordable tends to be a matter of opinion... it's all expensive if you ask me!! But this is where I buy my stuff. I'm hoping to find out that Azure standard will save me a bunch as well as being more easily accessible to me. Guest guest
Harmony It was one of the first things that made a huge difference in my son. Found a (cheap, portable) substitute that worked as well, so he was able to go on a regular diet. I was on it with him--lost weight, skin cleared up, asthma decreased and joints felt better. It was 10 years ago, I had to make my own bread, the pasta wasn't worth it, and the only decent sub I found was Van's frozen waffles. They were great. Got my stuff at Whole Foods and mail order. Now, there are zillions of things at Whole Foods. > I don't recall if this has been discussed on here before. Do any > the AS population on here deal with intestinal issues?
