use of sanitizing agent during whirlpool wound treatment

Our standard outpatient whirlpool treatment for wounds has not

included use of any " sanitizing " agent to the water in the lower

extremity tank (such as 1/3 cup Clorox, Sanizene, or Clorizene). We

have a new group of PT's in the department who say that a sanitizing

additive was standard procedure in the other facilities in which they

worked, and that it was added without any permission being required

from the referring physician. Opinions/policies please.
