Peroxide Tooth Whitener Safety Questioned

Tooth whiteners, used either at a dentists' office, or as

nonprescription kits often use carbamide peroxide as the tooth

bleaching-whitening agent. 1/3 of carbamide peroxide is made up of

hydrogen peroxide, a highly unstable, oxidizing agent. Some can-cer

specialists believe the use of these kits may partly explain the

jump in the number of cancer of the mouth cases in younger people.

Tooth whiteners have become very popular recently. Oral cancer

usually was found in older people with a history of drinking and

smoking. A researcher at town U.Hosp., B.son, MD,

chairman of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, presented 2 cases

of 2 young men in their 20s who developed advanced tongue cancer

dccades before it usually develops, after repeatedly using tooth

whiteners. The report was presented at the 6th International Conf.

on Head and Neck Cancer.

Research also shows that chemicals destroy the integrity of the

tooth enamel. The whitening effect may last for a while, but the

resulting porosity in the enamel can attract discoloration, Then the

need appears for yet more and more bleaching and more damage to the

teeth.

WOW! That’s a scary thought! When I got my braces off last summer I bleached my teeth a lot. The article is right, the stains do come back and whitening periodically does become necessary to keep the level of whiteness achieved. My teeth are still much lighter than they ever were but they do still stain like usual.

Yup, that carbamide peroxide sounds familiar. That's what my

holistic dentist gave me last year for tooth whitening. Gosh, I

don't know what to think of all this now! It worked great for

whitening, and I was really happy with the results, thinking all

this was pretty safe. I did wonder about what the long term effect

on my teeth would be, knowing that it made them temporarily porous

until they remineralized. He is a GREAT holistic dentist, too. I

trust him, as he carries books about the amaglam controvery, and

natural products for dental health. I guess I need to do some more

research on remineralization of teeth?
