Hi Kathy,

I’m sorry you have such a rough time detoxing. It sounds like your liver really is congested. Have you ever tried Adva Clear by Metagenics? You can buy it online. I started with 1/2 dose, one, twice per day and did fine. In a week or two, I went up to the full dose of two, twice per day. It is much more gentle than the detox supplement I am taking now. It sounds like the key for you is to start with something extremely gentle and gradually build up to more aggressive supplements. I started out with a product a few years ago called Detox One and Two, I think. It was extremely gentle. You can also buy alpha lipoic acid as an individual supplement. I have one from Metagenics called Mega Lipoate.

I wish I would have known you were having troubles, I just spoke to Dr. Leu yesterday and could have asked him. It sounds like it would definitely be worth the price of a phone consult to get on the right track. I know Jen is treating with him long distance and has been pleased with her care. You really want to take care of your liver.

I have the pain at the base of the neck also when I detox. It gets

so bad that I get terrible headaches with it. I know it is my

liver, but whenever I try something to detox ---supplements, coffee

enemas, beets, enzymes--I get in so much pain I can't stand it. The

pain is from terrible muscle spasms and twitches virtually all over

my body which then causes tendon tightening and accompanying pain

everywhere. I wish I knew how to proceed. I did do one liver

cleanse that seemed to help my food intolerances. I probably need

to try that again soon. The first one didn't bother me, but then

the first time I try anything it seems ok. It is when I keep trying

something or taking a supplement etc, that the reactions start to

set in. Over the last 2 months I have slowly added garlic, flax

seed oil, and oil of oregano back in on a daily basis. It was going

good until I started trying beet juice--now I am back in a pain

syndrome again. This is so frustrating to me. I know I need to

detox and do these things, but when I do, I feel lousy and it just

gets worse. I have never been able to outlast the herx. At some

point, I can no longer tolerate the symtpoms anymore, and I have to

back off until I can get back to a place of no pain again. It

appears I am very similar to Anita's son. I would love to know if

Dr. Leu has encountered this and how he handle's patients like

myself that react vehemently and endlessly to every method of detox

or supplementation. Any ideas? Thanks

I will look into those. I can't take alpa lipoic acid because it

chelates iron and I have very low iron levels. Which is one of the

reasons I thought beets would be good---high in iron and a good

liver detoxifier. But it really gets me in pain---so does eating

liver (organic). I think it is the enzymes. I feel like a freak

the way I react to enzymes and all detox. I even react strongly too

clay baths, epsom salt or seasalt baths, etc. I will feel great at

first, and then a couple of hours later develop terrible pain all

over my body. Like I just developed a massive case of arthritis.

It is unreal. No food or supplement I ever took bothered me (that I

know of) until I got sick. I just read your post about it being

hard to find the time to choose to feel lousy from detox. I SO

AGREE. Especially when I can't predict how long I will feel lousy

after I quit the detox. Usually it takes at least 3-4 days after

quitting a supplement, etc before I feel ok again. And it has, at

times, taken weeks. So I am clearly a little edgy when it comes to

trying detox methods!

Hi Kathy,

I initially reacted strongly to oral supplements. I started out with a very mild supplement, Detox One and Two, years ago and didn’t react to it, at least I don’t recall reacting to it. I did react to Adva Clear by Metagenics but don’t any longer. I believe it is the milk thistle and maybe the N-Acetylcysteine that got me. The new supplement I’m taking, Liver Protect, has alpha lipoic acid, milk thistle, selenium and N-Acetylcysteine and I can only take 1/2 dose right now. Full dose makes me feel like garbage. I’m looking at the labels of the Adva Clear and Liver Protect and the Adva Clear has only 50 mg of milk thistle and the Liver Protect has 200 mg. Adva Clear has 66 mg of N-Acetylcysteine and Liver Protect has 200 mg.

Kathy,

It took time to get used to the milk thistle and NAC. I started out on 1/2 dose and gradually built up. I am taking 1/2 dose of Liver Protect now and am tolerating it fine. I’ll move up to a full dose next week. I bought Detox One and Two from a previous ND. She believed in doing everything very slowly and more friendly to the body. I know gentle is best for some but it didn’t work for me. Dr. Leu is much more aggressive in his treatment with me.

Hi Kathy,

I used to react to clay and apple cider vinegar baths the same way. I’d feel like I had the flu for days!

Kenda

kenda
