Guest guest
Hi , For me it's hard to say. I'm 39 and started graying about 10 yrs ago but not too bad. It did seem to kick up a quite a bit more once I started on the methotrexate about a year ago. I did have a little hair loss at first but that tampered off as well and it all grew back. I've had the methotrexate upped lately and I'm noticing a lot more hair in the shower drain again. Sigh. D. Ramos

Guest guest
I have been on methotrexate for about a yr now, not only have I have more grey hairs but my hair has thinned out plus it is now curling in the back of my head while in the top is straight as can be. spoke to both my Rheumy and Primary care doctors and they both say it is due to the methotrexate. The worst the the curling since it goes all frizzy on you. really need to get it cut and styled so I can deal with this side effect. tina Subject: Re: Methotrexate + Grey Hair / Hair Loss To: Stillsdisease Date: Monday, May 30, 2011, 2:36 PM  Hi , For me it's hard to say. Guest guest
Yep..not grey but a darker ugly color and thinned out - falling out starting about 2 weeks after starting the mtx....after stopping the mtx..it started growing back nice..off of it for about a year and it looks fine. I was taking folic acid tablets once a day for the whole time so I do not think it was a deficiency that I had..just lucky, I guess, to have another side affect of drugs come true.. Have any of you been on MTX and your hair started turning grey due to the drug? I've read that it's a side effect of MTX and it's down to the folic acid defiency. Guest guest
I get my hair straightened when I go for my hair cut. She puts a chemical on and combs it through; leaves it for 12 minutes and then shampoos it out. I'm only 31 and on 12.5mg of MTX a week. I might try 'Just for men'. Something which I can use at home. The grey hairs seems to be appearing on the sides and bits at the back, but not on top. Guest guest
Hi friends When I first took MTX I was so shocked to see the 'trail' of hair I left behind after every shower. I only had very short hair anyway, but was quite shocked on the amount I seemed to be losing. My hair went very thin, and it had always been very thick, but I have to say I already had quite a lot of grey hair. Now 10 yrs on, and with lots of grey hair (always coloured!) and still on MTX, I find my hair has thickened to what it was. I keep my hair very short, and although it has never gone back to it's pre Stills thickness, it's OK , and I feel OK about it now. I remember my initial shock, and I was convinced I was going to end up with bald patches, which I never did. The Stills life is no easy life, but I do think the hair problem eventually settles down-and that's one less problem for us. Guest guest
I have quite thick hair and still sometimes get it thinned out a bit when I have it cut. So the MTX in one sense has made it better as it's thinner and easier to style. But not impressed with the grey hair. I've been looking at supplements which may help, because it's down to the MTX and not the natural aging process, so I'll be picking them up on Thursday and see if it helps. Some of these supplements include: Vitamin B Complex, Biotin, Calcium, Fish Oils, A+C+E, copper, folic acid, Para-Aminobenzoic Acid... quite a few! lol. Guest guest
I've read a bit over the last few days and there does seem to be a link. MTX = often a Vitamin B12 deficiency > B12 deficiency can cause gray hair. But there seems to be other things which can be lossed in the tablets we take, such as Zinc, Biotin (and other B vitamins) and Calcium. Guest guest
Hi, I have lost a bit of hair with MTX, but my Dr has me on Folic Acid, A Super Complex B12 (which I have always been low on), Vit D 5000 and Calcium. I have not had the problem with Grey hair yet and I am 46 now. Started MTX when I was 38. What you found may be a clue. I get a good multi-vitamin which I am sure has Zinc in it. Hope that helps a bit. Hugs, Alli
Guest guest
Thanks Ali, I'll certainly try it - if it doesn't work, I'll be on the lookout for any 'wash-in-wash-out' hair dye lol. Could you please let me know what the amounts in this Complex B12 is? The ones I've seen in the health shop I normally go to, have it at 1000mcg per tablet. Guest guest
Thanks Ali. Yeah I take 5mg the day after my MTX but have read too much Folic Acid can mask any B12 deficiency so generally only take 1 small 400mcg on the other days. I used to take 1 or 2 B-100 Complex per day but realised I've not taken any of them for a few months. They have 100mg of the main B Vitamins including B1, B2, Niacin (also seen it mentioned a lot re: gray hair), B6, B12. So maybe there's a link between me stopping taking it and gray hairs appearing a few months later. Guest guest
Hi I was going to raise Folic Acid, then Alli did (hey Alli, good to hear you!). Just to reinforce her point though, my docs have me on 5mg of Folic Acid everyday except for the day I take MTX. They said that was imperative. No hair loss or greying; I've been on MTX since November 2010. I don't know if Folic Acid is the key re hair - they test my B12 every month and no problems there either. But...everyone's is different. Love to everyone, F x
Guest guest
Hi Francesca, I don't get tested for vitamin deficiency at all. Perhaps I should write to my doctor and ask if it can be included in my monthly blood test. I know I have my kidneys and liver tested (Liver enzymes have been over 100 on last test), but nothing to do with vitamins. Are you tested for any others apart from vitamin b12?
