Schizoid Personality. The instructor said it was equal with AS. What are your thoughts? Well first of all I would call into question the instructor's qualifications. AS is more aligned with schizotypal personality disorder. There is a difference. He should google it sometime. Bad idea to correct him of course, LOL, but it's at that point where I think hmmm. Cluster A Personality Disorders are those considered to be marked by odd, eccentric behavior. Paranoid, Schizoid and Schizotypal Personality Disorders are in this category. I realize it's probably more of a rhetorical question at this point. I go back to what I said before, that when " they " stop pathologizing AS, then we will be able to come up with better tools to help this variation of the human condition maximize our considerable potential. - Helen
Guest guest
I think part of the reason this belief exists is because of the mistreatment (not as in abuse but as in incorrect treatment plan from professionals) of people with AS/autism. They did not know that we were literally hearing things they were not, seeing things/noticing details they were not and judged us off their perceptions. Made us look crazy. Guest guest
I know what I would tell them. I would say something along the lines of I understand why you could come to believe that if you are working with old information. AS is fairly new a dx and still undergoing changes. Here is the newest criteria for your information. I have put the two side by side so you can see what the real differences are." But, you know I'm not exactly the silent type. LOL Knowing me I would add, "I'll take my 'A' now. LOL Dual dx centers/hospitals(using that term loosely) were designed to get addicts help at a time when insurance would not cover addiction. Most any DMSIV dx would work. Depression and anxiety being the most common. It was/is a dangerous practice as far as I am concerned as so much of DSM is subjective. Way too many people are given dx's that can destroy careers, marriages, etc. not undestanding that once it is put in writing, you will never get it off your record. Drug addicts in particular can present with a wide variety of characteristics where each one might sound like something from several different real mental illnesses. Read thru some of them. You will find yourself saying "Oh, I know someone sort of like that". Dx'ing is way more complicated than that. I fought for years to get parents to stop putting in writing that there AS kid was dx'd Oppositional Defiant Disordered. Yipes! What a can of worms that is. So many AS kids had a laundry list of dx's and the only 'real' one was AS. If they would read the ENTIRE process they would see that it states that you cannot even look at it until the child is 16. These got the dx because they had meltdowns. Period. Nothing else. I was a counselor in 2 dual dx centers, one for the rich and famous and one for women only with children under 6.
