How was everyones 4th of July weekend? How was the weather?

It was 102 here the last time I remember anyone checking, but it was nice and cool inside. We had a BBQ -- excellent pork ribs cooked on the grill (by my son-in-law), potatoes, corn-on-the-cob, macaroni salad and absolutely fabulous banana cake. YUM! And we tried a jar of my homemade bread and butter pickles. They were actually good! lol.. I've never made pickles before and no one died after eating them... so I guess the pickles were a success.

LOL How fun! Salt potatoes. You know, we don't have those here. My Mother visited me in New York one summer and loved those potatoes! I also miss the stands where we could buy the cheese curds and such things. :o)

I bribed Jerry to bbq some ribs and make salt potatoes while i sat my fanny on a chaise in the backyard and kept an eye on charity, the babies sat in their strollers and made faces at me. Of course i may have dozed here and there Then we drove to the lake to watch fireworks to find out they were on Sunday but met my father and his partner there and they had sparklers. They said they got them for Charity, but somehow i don't think giving a 4 year old a piece of metal with burning material on the end would be a smart idea. Instead Jerry ran around the parking lot of an ice cream stand with a sparkler in each hand singing "Hooray for the Red, White, and Blue"

Definitely not what I expected for my 4th but quite enjoyable. Today he demanded I make good on my bribe, so I made him his steak and salad with homemade ice cream. I'm done with bribes, his cooking took an hour tops, I just got done Unplanned but still thoroughly enjoyable

Ooooohhhh, salt potatoes. Tell me how you do that. We had salt potatoes when we visited New York and they were wonderful. I've tried it here in Arizona but it just isn't the same. What's the secret? Is it a special kind of potatoes? I tried it with new white potatoes and with red ones and it doesn't work right.

Well then Challis and Sharon, since I don't believe anyone should be deprived of one of the major food groups I shall have to mail a crate of Hinerwadel's Famous Salt potatoes as well as a crate of Palatine Bridge cheese curd. Sometimes, I really do love NY

Well, there are two ways. One is to go to Walmart and buy a bag of them and just cook them up. Of course, away from NY there isn't that ability. The other way is 10lbs small new potatoes, 2.5lbs of salt, and of course water. Put the potatoes, salt, and water in a pot and boil them until tender. If you don't put the potatoes in from the beginning they don't get the proper "salty" taste. Drain them and melt butter (its got to be real butter, believe me) The best way to eat them is to put melted butter in a cup or bowl, spear a potato and dip it into the melted butter. Its so good, I'm drooling just thinking about it

I had a very relaxing 4th of July. It started Saturday with a family reunion on my hubby's side. Then Sunday I just took it easy as my feet swelled up on Saturday and had not come down by Sunday. Then on the 4th we went to my old college and spend a Old Fashioned 4th where there were games for kids and alot of junk food. We did not get to play bingo this year as we had to pick my one daughter up at work and by the time we had walked through the mall it was time to go and get her, she suggested we go out for supper which has always been our tradition, so we went to Ruby Tuesdays and she paid. Then we came home and I was in bed by 8. I have to be up every mornng at 3:45 to make sure she gets off to work. I did spend Saturday with all but one grandchild and Monday I spent it with 2 of the grandkids.

Salt potatoes are, so far, ONLY available in NY. BTW I saw a low sodium recipe on the bag (they come in a bag)...it said "Low sodium: omit salt"

I still chuckle at that one...

Oh Trista, salt potatoes are the best little food you could ever haveBasically they are new potatoes boiled in brine and then dipped in butter to eat. I am guessing its more of a NY food because Syracuse NY is salt city and they originated there. When we lived in Michigan, there were no salt potatoes and I thought I had been punished to live without themI think I need to start a crusade to introduce the magic of salt potatoes to the world

I have always used regular salt, and had the best results with uniodized.

I'm gonna try it again. It's been years (14 plus) since I tried it. Does it matter what kind of salt? Regular or Kosher?

It was 102 here the last time I remember anyone checking, but it was nice and cool inside. We had a BBQ -- excellent pork ribs cooked on the grill (by my son-in-law), potatoes, corn-on-the-cob, macaroni salad and absolutely fabulous banana cake. YUM! And we tried a jar of my homemade bread and butter pickles. They were actually good! lol.. I've never made pickles before and no one died after eating them... so I guess the pickles were a success.

Well, the offer stands. I could have a box prepared with bags of salt potatoes and ready to ship in an hour Cheese curd might be more tricky

LOL. Are they really salty? I'm not a salty food kind of person, but DH is big time. I hardly add salt to anything I eat and he baptizes all his food. jerry plows wrote:

If you prepare them according to the directions, the salt dries on the skins white and a little flaky, but dipped in butter you don't taste a real strong salty flavor. If they are left over night and eaten the next day, they get real real salty tasting.Trista wrote:

Salt potatoes are, so far, ONLY available in NY. BTW I saw a low sodium recipe on the bag (they come in a bag)...it said "Low sodium: omit salt"

I still chuckle at that one...
