Guest guest
Would you like to express your opinion to Congress? Rogene Note: forwarded message attached. Stop the Make Congress More Corrupt Bill Dear Rogene, Yesterday, the House Administration Committee passed H.R. 1316, which we've dubbed the "Make Congress More Corrupt" bill, on a straight party line vote with six Republicans supporting and three Democrats opposing it. This bill is, in a word, undemocratic. It would allow wealthy donors to funnel a million dollars to federal candidates. It must be stopped. It should come as no surprise to you that Tom DeLay, arguably the most corrupt Majority Leaders in modern time, supports this bill. At a time that Congress is working under an ethical cloud, we don't need weaker campaign finance laws. We need to strengthen them. Act now by emailing your member of Congress. Let's try to generate 10,000 emails by the weekend. After you've taken action, invite your friends to do the same. Can we do it? Thanks, DonnellyPublic Campaign Action Fund Send a letter to the following decision maker(s): Your Congressperson Below is the sample letter: Subject: Stop the Make Congress More Corrupt bill Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here], I am writing to demand that you oppose H.R. 1316, the "Make Congress More Corrupt" bill, that would do away with total contribution limits. This bill destroys the principle of one person, one vote by allowing virtually unlimited political donations. Please let me know if you intend to oppose it. Sincerely, Rogene Schorer Take Action! What's At Stake: Federal candidates raised more than $2 billion in the 2004 elections from individuals and political action committees. Under current law, individuals are limited in how much they can give per election cycle to $101,400. But legislation passed by a congressional committee on a 6-3 straight party line vote (chaired by Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH), a member being investigated for his connections to lobbyists) would remove that total limit on donations from individuals so that someone could funnel as much as $1 million to federal candidates. It should come as no surprise that Tom DeLay supports this bill. Wealthy donors have too much influence, not too little. Congress shouldn't be weakening campaign finance laws, they should be strengthening them by adopting comprehensive public financing like what is working well in several states around the country.
