Guest guest
I have noticed that for several months I just haven't been interested in overly sweet things, which is no big deal I just haven't been been eating much desserts (probably a good thing). Then about a week ago I started having lots of sensitivity to salt. The sensitivity is to the point where I can't stand to eat a single potato chip (it might as well be a salt lick) and normal foods that just have salt in them taste really salty (things like natural peanut-butter or pizza crust to name a few). these new tastes are certainly forcing me to eat healthier, but just wondering if anyone else had had this sudden change of taste buds it is it might be a sign of any other health problem? The only medication changes I have done recently is I am working on a prednisone taper and have started doing two Kineret shots each day. Thanks for any insights! -Jojo
Guest guest
Good morning Jojo, I know at a certain point in my early years both the disease AND medications caused my tastes to change extremely. With the onset I had lost all but a little of my appatite. Then with certain medications my food tasted like metal, etc. so forth. Be sure and bring this up with your doctor to see if it's anything unusual or to be expected with something you're taking. Best to you, From: jocammie@... Guest guest
Hi Johanna, I have had stills for over ten years. For about 7 of those years, the doctors missed that I also had a thyroid/adrenal problem. Mostly because my TSH (regular thyroid test), T3, T4 (test not always done for thyroid), and a few other test that should be done for thyroid problems (like cortisol) and to check if you are producing any of your own adrenaline (which when you take steroids, produces adrenaline) and if you are on Steriods for a long time, can suppress your ability to produce adrenaline yourself. Anyway, Sugar cravings can be linked to hypothyroidism. You can look it up online. For me, I had many symptoms that could have been linked to Stills but were actually caused by hypothyroidism. (For instance, I would go in a pool that was 90 degrees on a 98% day, get out and still freeze - literally had to go inside and get out of my wet bathing suit I was so cold). Many others too. There are a lot of sites that describe hypothyroidism and a lot of checklists. I am not saying that this is your problem, but it is something you should at least read about and see if you have multiple symptoms of. It never hurts to check - better safe than sorry. I have been on thyroid meds, along with my Stills meds for over a year now. I have been much better now and have a great endocrinologist who monitors how much steroids I should be on, along with how much thyroid med I should be on. He is a Vanderbilt doctor and my rheumy is also. They both say it is not uncommon to have an auto-immune disease and a problem with your endocrine system also. Hope this helps a bit, at least it is something to look into. Hugs, Alli
