Guest guest
I just found this interesting report stating that infant formula supplemented with DHA has hexane in it, because hexane is used to get the DHA out of the algae to put into the formula. I used that supplemented formula for my youngest three. I would do almost everything different if I had a child today. Anyhow, so I guess I need to look into what chelates hexane. http://cornucopia.org/DHA/DHA_Update_2_09.pdf Love and prayers, Heidi N
Guest guest
Hi heidi, I think the way hexane is used in oil extraction is as a pressurized gas. the main problem with over exposure seems to be polyneuropathy of the peripheral nerves, and in extreme cases, the entire CNS. This implies, at least in my mind, that it has an affinity for fatty tissue (myelin sheath etc)...so a traditional chelator may not be the most effective thing. I would think you would need lots of methyl donors, and increased glutathione (milk thistle?) along with antioxidants (fat soluble) to scavenge cell membranes. Just my opinion.... This is an issue for a lot of us as almost all therapeutic oils are hexane extracted. Depending on the sensitivity of your child, and probably their oxidative stress load, this could be another one of those things that seems like no big deal but snow balls into a larger problem. We were using Nordic Naturals DHA as a seperate supplement for a long time.... I guess molecularly distilled oils (which use an actual physical membrane for filtration) are the best option at this point. As far as I know, manufacturers are not required to disclose the use of hexane as a solvent.
