Guest guest
FOR INTERESTED FAMILIES, ARC BROWARD IS ALSO PROVIDING A SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE. HURRY, HURRY ... only 20 slots left ! ARC Broward's KAMP KRAYOLA will serve preschoolers, ages 3 - 5, young children, ages 6 to 10, and early adolescents, ages 11 to 13, in a summer camp setting. The camp will serve up to 80children. KAMP KRAYOLA will provide a safe, structured and secure summer camp experience. Activities will be age appropriate and functional and the environment will be structured to promote a feeling of comfortableness for the children as studies clearly demonstrate that children who are initially comfortable in structured programs are more successful with future inclusion efforts. With a highly concentrated attention of staff, children with disabilities will have the opportunity to acquire leisure/recreation and social skills within the context of an enjoyable summer program. This program will serve as a stepping-stone to more inclusive environments and experiences in the future including educational, after school and summer programs. KAMP KRAYOLA will offer a variety of socialization, leisure and recreational services to enhance the development of appropriate socialization and adaptive skills for children with developmental disabilities, specifically mental retardation or autism, who have mild to severe behavioral challenges. ARC Broward recognizes that some children with developmental disabilities are precluded from participation in typical summer programs by virtue of their behaviors (e.g. aggression, property destruction, elopement, socially intrusive behaviors, etc). These children require additional supports that are not typically present in other inclusive sites. Never the less, ARC Broward recognizes that specialized socialization, leisure and recreational activities are valuable and facilitate efforts to remove barriers and facilitate the children's full participation in a broad range of community opportunities with proper support and supervision. We also embrace the philosophy of inclusion and in order to support such, curricula and activity schedules will include many community-based outings. Facility based activities will include reading time, sports, music, arts and crafts, etc. Eligible children include those with a specific developmental disability diagnosis of mental retardation or autism. Children must also engage in mild to severe maladaptive behaviors that include one or more of the following: those that result in injury to the child or others (e.g. caregivers, siblings, peers, etc); those that result in damage to property; and/or those that are disruptive to the environment (e.g. elopement, excessive tantrumming, etc). KAMP KRAYOLA will primarily operate at ARC Broward's main campus located in Sunrise. The campus is located on eight beautifully landscaped acres and contains many amenities that support camp activities. Campers will have access to a classrooms designed for small group activities; an 8,000 great room/auditorium fully equipped with a full service kitchen; two handicap accessible playgrounds and two acres of grassy play area for outside recreational activities such as organized sporting activities. This large area will be the site of the camp's Summer Olympics. For additional information or to receive an application, contact Dr. Roth at . Guest guest
This is the first year ARC Broward will be operating KAMP KRAYOLA. We received grant from the Children's Services Council to operate such in response to the need to provide summer programming, particularly since ESY was dramatically reduced this year. We currently operate the TIP program. We will be operating the camp with an average ratio of 1 counselor to 2 campers and have the ability to work with children with behavioral challenges, whether those are mild or severe. We will have nursing services on site from 9 - 5pm and will provide lunch and snack (except if the child is on a special diet then the family is required to provide). Although this is our first summer camp experience, we have operated a variety of programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities for nearly 50 years and feel confident that this program will be a wonderful opportunity for the campers. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in various community based recreational activities several times per week. The sliding fee is based upon last year's total household income and is nominal.
Guest guest
, I passed along the other readers question about the JCC in Davie and a friend of mine whose daughter goes there had the following comments: see below Dena I have an 8 year old autistic daughter who has been attending the JCC camp for the last 4 summers. She is going on the 5th summer. She has done very well there. the last two years she has been in the special needs group. This summer she is going to be in a main stream group. I have been very happy at the JCC for years. Marlane Krane
