Guest guest
Dear Glitter, I went and checked on Omega Nutrition CO. Here is what is said: " Ingredients: Coconut Oil is made from 100%-organic expeller pressed coconut oil. " And in an FAQ: " What is the difference between Omega Nutrition Coconut Oil and other brands? Coconut Oil from Omega Nutrition is certified organic and kosher. This naturally saturated product is not hydrogenated and is free of trans fatty acids. Ideal for use in higher temperature cooking, Coconut Oil is a perfect vegan/dairy-free alternative to butter or margarine. As with all of Omega Nutrition's oils, Coconut Oil is stored and packaged in opaque HDPE containers to protect it from the damaging effects of light. " [** quick note here - true organic " virgin " coconut oil is very stable and can last several years] ** Note the odd way they state the ingredients: " Ingredients: Coconut Oil is made from 100%-organic expeller pressed coconut oil. " ** The most common way of expressing ingredients would read: Ingredients: 100%-organic expeller pressed coconut oil By putting the words Coconut Oil in front it is telling you the origin of the oil but not the process. They do state in another place it is expeller expressed. This is meaningless because it's what happens to it after the oil is extracted that counts. The fact that it has no odor or flavor of coconuts is a dead giveaway that it has been refined, bleaches and deodorized (RBD). This is done with a product of the coconut called copra which cannot be used until it is RBD. The other giveaway is price. Actual virgin coconut oil costs more than this oil. 16 oz of Omega Nutrition retails for $7.95. 16 oz. of virgin coconut oil (VCO) retails for $18. 32 oz. Omega Nutrition is $12.95. 32 oz. VCO is $25. Here is a description of coconut oil that is not copra-based: Virgin Coconut Oil Virgin Coconut Oil can only be achieved by using fresh coconut meat or what is called non-copra. Chemicals and high heating are not used in further refining, since the natural, pure coconut oil is very stable with a shelf life of several years. There are currently two main processes of manufacturing Virgin Coconut Oil: 1. Quick drying of fresh coconut meat which is then used to press out the oil. Using this method, minimal heat is used to quick dry the coconut meat, and the oil is then pressed out via mechanical means. 2. Wet-milling. With this method the oil is extracted from fresh coconut meat without drying first. " Coconut milk " is expressed first by pressing. The oil is then further separated from the water. Methods which can be used to separate the oil from the water include boiling, fermentation, refrigeration, enzymes and mechanical centrifuge. The method we use at Mt. Banahaw Health Products Corp. in the Philippines is fermentation. The coconut milk expressed from the freshly harvested coconuts is fermented for 24-36 hours. During this time, the water separates from the oil. The oil is then slightly heated for a short time to remove moisture, and filtered. The result is a clear coconut oil that retains the distinct scent and taste of coconuts. This is a traditional method of coconut oil extraction that has been used in the Philippines for hundreds of years. Laboratory tests show that this is a very high quality coconut oil, with the lauric acid content being 50 to 55%. This oil is not mass produced, but made by hand just as it has been done for hundreds of years. Since we live in the community where the coconuts grow, we personally guarantee that the best organic coconuts available are used in producing this Virgin Coconut Oil, and that no chemicals whatsoever are used in the growing or processing of the coconuts. Our coconuts are also certified organic according to strict USDA standards. In addition, all of our coconuts are hand-picked within 24 hours of harvest. Only those nuts that produce the highest quality coconut oil are chosen, while the rest of the crop is sold to copra dealers. I hope this clarifies things. The reason I asked if it was NOW brand was because years ago I spent days on the phone with them while they insisted they sold " organic coconut oil " yet it had no taste. After a series of very detailed questions, a person higher up in the company finally stated that they did refine, bleach and deodorize their oil because they HAD to (meaning it was copra). All people prior to him positively insisted this product was not refined. It was a real PIA, lol. I cc'd the list because some people may be looking to use coconut oil for nutrition.
