Hi Donna,

It isn't that you can't get a doctor at Kaiser during the weekends and

holidays. The policy here is that on weekends and holidays if a doctor is needed

you go to Kaiser ER or Minor Injury. You do not get your own primary doctor, you

get who is on duty at the time. Kaiser Hospice needs the request from the

primary doctor before they can assess and the primary doctors do not work on

weekends and holidays. You are not stranded if you need a doctor, you get who is

on duty during the weekends and holidays, but yes, you are stranded if you need

your doctor's request for Hospice during those times. Hospice will not over

step the doctor's request and they will only take the request from the patient's

primary doctor.

This is the second time with Kaiser that I have encountered this. Jan

Sara, Janet and all,

I cannot believe that Hospice isn't available for up to 3 days and people are

left to their own devices for the Holidays!

We need to find a way to check into this and make whatever changes need to be

made where ever. I don't know what I would have done without the Hospital

Hospice. They were extremely helpful and kept Mom comfortable.

I don't have a very good view of Kaiser right at the moment. There should be a

way to contact the MD in an emergency. Things happen and not necessarily

Hospice, and if anyone needs a Dr they should be able to get one. Even if it is

move a person into the hospital and get care.

I was pretty much alone and had some family who helped, but the better share was

done alone. I don't know what I would have done without the Hospital Hospice.

I am so appalled that I don't know what else to say. No one should have to do

the dying process pretty much alone. (I am talking about either Jan or Jim.) My

guess is when this is over someone will do what happen to me several times and

say " Well, all you had to do was........... " And of course it was always to

late for me.

My heart and thoughts are with you Jan.

Hugs,

Donna R

Janet!

Although hospice is a great service don't wear yourself out and worry

about NOT reaching them. I had an extrememly hard time caring for my

father during the holidays last year...everyone and I mean everyone

was vacationing...even the hospice people.

Please use family and friends at this time...sometimes in the end like

this dealing with hospice and Kasier is more trouble than it's worth.

As long as he can get some meds and there should be an on call dr for

that.

I'm sorry very sorry you are having experience this....My hands were

so tied with my dad and hospice really didn't help me except to pay

for his meds. There was no one to help except his aid and that was set

up after the holiday. I did it mostly by myself....poor Janet and Jim!!

Pull together and be sure he is as comfortable as he can be. It is

hard to watch and I wish I could be there with you. Where are you?

Where is Janet. I feel so helpless myself knowing she is going through

the same thing I went through during the holidays. IT IS SO AWFUL no

matter how strong you are to be at the mercy of a medical institution.

I did mention though, that I did get in contact with the Kaiser Hospice and

until they can get the request from Jim's primary doctor, they will call the nh

and see how Jim is and if they think he is in any discomfort they can have the

nh doctor perscribe morphine for him. Jan
