Guest guest
I am now realizing how horrible this thing is...He was hospitalized for 10 days and his stool samples came back negative ..he then had the colonoscopy and they came back positive..c diff...the doctor ordered the home visit for blood tests by the nurse and I assumed that it was to see if the meds were working...he is also on coumadin so that is probably the reason..Oh..my a lot to learn..I am afraid to have our 2 year old grandchildren visit because of contamination...am I being paranoid? Thanks for your support..Meg P.S. I tried to email you directly but could not get through.. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
C-diff was a new to me illness. I did a google search to find out what is " c-diff " . The easiest " pro-biotic " that one can start with is apparently yogert . Probiotics are a good thing for all of us, but especially those taking antibiotics. < http://www.cdiffsupport.com/aboutcdiff.html > Apparently c-diff is already in all our digestive tract / systems. The good bacteria keep it under control. When we use antibiotics to controll other illness, the good bacteria in the digestive tract get knocked down, and the bad bacteria like c-diff get out of control. The very young and the older people with compromised health issues are at higher risk. Guest guest
Meg, I'm so glad that Deb is here too. There is alot of info on the disease but it boils down to a few hings, it is contagious. YOU need to be very careful. Mostly though it acts on immune systems that are compromised....my father, my son, and I have Candida which is an Intestinal Yeast Allergy that Drs choose to ignore. Crook did much research on it and I believe people who have this condition are at greater risk for C-diff if they take antibiotics and are older or have gut surgerys etc. As far as your grandchildren....they are healthy right? Unless they are sick or have risk factors, a visit or two probably won't hurt. I cleaned my father and stuck my hand in some feces a few times and came out unscathed...I washed my hands throughly and clothes too and wore the gloves and robe after we found out about what it was. I think though that you and your adult children must talk about it and learn...I personally would have let mine see him but would be very careful not to let them eat, drink, use toileting facility after him. Do you have a separate bathroom they could use? You can carry the germs too. Get used to wearing gloves and changing them often. The problem is, it comes in cycles and once you get it when you are compromised, it's so difficult to get rid of. I do not want to sound pessimistic but it is indeed a process that is very discouraging. It was very uncomfortable....he mainly got tired of 'going' all the time and felt very self consious about it. Did you get the links I sent to your email addy? If not, please post here and I'll check back this afternoon. My email is cheeps4u @yahoo.com. I put a space in so you can view it on this board or in the digest. Just type it in without the space. Love to you, Sara
Guest guest
I agree with what everyone has said already and there is a lot of information around now about this disease. There is so much to read and a lot of it is for the medical world! Probiotics would definitely help but once the condition has progressed, more intense treatment is needed, i.e. antibiotics. I think it is something to be aware of in anyone who is elderly and already sick. There has been a lot recently on UK tv about the condition as it is starting to become increasingly common.
