Guest guest
Hi All just wondering if anyone is able to help with the values part of ACT. I have been working on defusion and expansion and I am happy at where I am at, however Bill Cameron once told be that ACT is like a 3 legged stool and without values you are really no doing it. I know how much I feel with just the first 2 steps so I am really excited about adding the last part also. Anyway on to my values! I guess I am stuck because I am over analysing each of my values I.e. I value being a good employee, do I really value being a good employee or do I just think I value it because that is what is expected of me, because it gives me finanical freedom, or is it because I am highly competive and seek a high level of approval, so by being a good employee I get told I am doing a great, which makes me feel better than everyone else ( and feeds the competiveness and the need for approval) or am I just think to much into this!!!!! Guest guest
Deb - This comes up from time to time, and I think it's because we tend to think of 'values' as 'things', or 'statements'... I've found it much more useful to think in terms of 'valuing', as a way of putting values into action. Said another way, the question of 'values' tends to come up in the context of choosing among courses of action - should I go here and do this, or should I go there and do that? Maybe I shouldn't do anything just yet... Which 'feels right'? Not, "Which one feels easier? or 'more comfortable? or will please others? or 'will make me look good?"... Rather, "Which one moves me in the direction I need to go?" 'Values' as 'things' or 'statements' aren't very sensitive to context - they're more like 'rules'. ' Valuing' is more like active, flexible, context-sensitive 'choosing'. The mind is always looking for 'the right answer', the 'rule', the 'solution to the problem'... 'valuing' is very different and often unfamiliar and even uncomfortable - at least at first.
