Guest guest
Hi Lacey, Don't want to scare you because I don't even know if there was a link, and your to young. But I was experencing the same thig for awhile before my stroke. But I have also had a couple more times since so don't really think it was connected but I would check with my Doc if I were you! Guest guest
Lacey, I don't know how "potentially dangerous" this might be...but I know difficulty swallowing can be a symptom of many things. I would call your doctor for advice. Let us know, Janet -----Original Message-----From: Lacey Sent: Sunday, December 21, 2003 2:19 AMTo: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group Subject: PLEASE REPLY, Have a QuestionI've noticed that sometimes when i'm eating, i'll have something in my mouth, but I can't swallow. The couple times this has happened, I had a little milk left in my carton and I took care of it with that, but now I carry a big water bottle to school with me, in case it ever happens again. Well, and because I drink through the day, an a half-pint of liquid isn't much for me. I usually drink half the bottle at lunch.I need you all to post back if you've had this happen to you, or know what it's called, because it's potentially dangerous, and I need to know. Thanks,Lacey

Do yours happen only when you eat? Is there pain assocciated with it? Have you had to throw up to relieve the pressure? Those are symptoms of a hiatal hernia. Sometimes the pain seeems to go all the way thru to my spine. The second kind I'd only have when I laid down. Eventually I'd have to get up and drink some water so I could swallow. But it was transiate and only lasted a few days. With my Mom dying from parkinsons it scared me to death when they would hit. My Dr. thought it could be an adverse reaction to the flexeril or trazadone I was taking at the time. [ but not anymore] Instead of the dry mouth that is the normal side affect I got the excess saliva and inability to swallow. I agree with Janet. If your Dr. doesn't know then he needs to and soon. He may have an answer that will relieve or stop the attacks. Good luck and keep us onformed. You don't want that happening over a big Christmas meal !!! :0) Praying for you in Iowa, k
Guest guest
Lacey in any such I recommend going to a upper GI specialist. Do you by chance have GERD or acid reflux ? Like said it could be a small Hernia but if you have acid reflux the problem is usually a combination of the hernia and throat closing in which I Have. I had the scope done I have severe GERD and a hernia. He stretched my throat opening which due to years of nerves closed to the size of a peanut. I'm ok the procedure was a snap. I heavily suggest you find a GI Doc yourself only he can tell. Guest guest
Heya Lacey -- I've had this happen to me -- but it's usually been when I've eaten something I'm allergic to. I'll try to swallow and just CANT for a moment -- my throat feels "cloggy" and I have a hard time breathing for a moment. At that point, I have to either spit out what I'm eating or really concentrate on swallowing. When it happens, I know I need to stop eating for a while and take my inhaler and an antihistamine. Weirdly, drinking water does NOT always help if I do it right away. I did talk to a doctor about it and it's on my charts now in case I have a more severe reaction. Definitely talk to your doctor about it. Eve
Guest guest
, Think i'm gonna' make an appointment with doc. It's about time. Thanks for the suggestion. How are you? Lacey
Guest guest
, I'm gonna' go see the doc. Janet, I don't think I answered your post, but i'm gonna' go see the doc, and soon, I guess. So far, i've only had that happen to me a couple of times, but it's always been when I was eating. Also, no pain or throwing up, luckily. I do have a lot of twinges in my back, though, and I have back pain a lot. So does my mother, but that's because she fell on the ice twice in like, 1 week. It wouldn't surprise me if I had a hernia, though. I do a lot of things, and I find myself having to lifet heavy stuff occasinally. If I DID have one, I bet it was because I lifted that ladder during the setup for the FBLA thing, or that thing of Soft-Drink crap I had to lift during to summer. I've often worried that I had a hernia. I guess now is the time to go fine out. Thanks, Lacey
Guest guest
JJ, I do have Acid Reflux, and my mom said that it sounded like I had GERD because my uncle used to have it. What causes that, and what can I do about it? Thanks, Lacey
Guest guest
Eve, That's interesting... an allergic reaction. I DO have allergies, and from time to time I use a Nebulizer, but I never thought about that. I can tell you this. All the times it has happened, I was at school, eating school food, but any more specific than that... I don't know. Every day except Mondays I eat the school pizza, but I don't know what I was eating that day. I'll check up on those. So let me see. It's a possible Hiatial Hernia, GERDs complications, and Allergies. Gosh, what if I have all 3? Man... Oh well. I'll need a doc to tell me. Thanks, Lacey
Guest guest
Here you go honey, http://www.medicinenet.com/Gastroesophageal_Reflux_Disease_GERD/page1.htm -----Original Message-----From: Lacey Sent: Monday, December 22, 2003 12:28 AMTo: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group Subject: Re: PLEASE REPLY, Have a QuestionJJ,I do have Acid Reflux, and my mom said that it sounded like I had GERD because my uncle used to have it. Guest guest
For me it is not only heredity and lifestyle ( stress ) but a also Sleep Apnea. If you have GERD than that's your answer. Go see a GI specialist before you get so bad you gotta be scoped like me every 2 yrs. Cut back on the caffeine, Dark colas, Chocolate can some times kick it up, and esp. spices. What kills me is Oregano. Pizza heavy in that kills me. Learn to listen to your body. Before you get like this train wreck. So make the appt. God Bless JJ Re: PLEASE REPLY, Have a Question JJ,I do have Acid Reflux, and my mom said that it sounded like I had GERD because my uncle used to have it. Guest guest
And I hate to Harp but check for apnea too. My partner was half dead by the time I figured it out. Thank God For A strong Faith... JJ RE: Re: PLEASE REPLY, Have a Question I'd forgotten you have asthma. A lot of people with Asthma also have GERD -- the constant acidy feeling at the back of the throat can trigger asthma attacks, which is no fun. Yup, definitely sounds like you're overdue for a doctor's appointment. Good news is that most of the possibilities are easily remedied with medications and diet changes. Guest guest
Eve, Yep, I probably DO have Asthma, even though no doctor has diagnosed me yet, but you're right. I need to go because I wouldn't want anything to make me have an Asthma attack, if that's what I have. Thaks, Lacey
