There are different flu vaccines with different ingredients. An

allergy or sensitivity to an ingredient may be the reason you react to

one vaccine and not another. At least 2 vaccines have latex as an

ingredient and several have formaldehyde which are both common

allergens. I've included the link for the WAVE page with flu vaccine

ingredients.

I had the flue vaccination this year after developing double

pneumonia last year where I thought i was going to die from

respiratory arrest!!

This years vaccination is safe and at least in my case, successful.

also I had NO reaction from it at all. I do not usually have

yearly vaccinations, but will do so from now on.

The flu shot question stirred quite a debate. I have come to realize

(after years of dealing with my own family members) that each one of

us is different and has their own fears and phobias. There are people

who will never consider a surgery unless they are dying, some will

drive 11 or more hours to avoid flying, some will not get a shot,

some will never stop smoking for fear of getting a heart attack(!)...

I am not afraid of any of the previous ones but I am always afraid of

new medications since I had a severe allergic reaction. We all have

those fears. They are supposed to protect us but often hurt us in the

long run. I think it is important to step back each time and weigh

the risks objectively. What is it that we are really afraid of? The

needle, the allergic reaction, the thimerosal, possible side effects?

I had a friend who was missing most of her vaccinations due to her

needle phobia. She has three kids. I am not sure how she did it but

she was more afraid of the shot than being in labor! Fears are not

always reasonable but very HUMAN and we need to understand those who

have them.

I would recommend getting one every year. I have reduced the number of what

I thought were colds-probably not-to more than half. I don't need to be

coughing and putting any more strain on my brain.

As far as the shots go and reactions. . . I had the H1N1 this year and last

and had no complications, as well as the regular shot.

Once I did have a reaction. I felt ill one evening, but the next day I was

fine. It didn't stop me from getting any more because I'd gotten them many

times before without a reaction.

If you don't get a flu shot and catch the flu, it is possible to get a sinus

infection or pneumonia if it doesn't go away.
