Guest guest Posted August 19, 2009 Report Share Posted August 19, 2009 It is funny U mention this as I was just telling my employment counselor after completing the last of a zillion tests as I am requesting Federal funds from the stimulus package that all this testing and the results just amaze me. That want to know if I have the skill sets to start this program and if I am suited for it. In all the testing addiction counseling scored high and well as other positions in the mental health field. Unfortunately this funding only funds addiction in my community but it will allow me to branch out with the certificate. It also requires 1000 hours in the field that will allow me to network. Cheap labor. lol The informational interviews with other counselors have been wonderful and enlightening. It is a tough course and not the highest paying position so U really have to want to work with people and be good at it. There are only a few programs here outside of mental health and their security is HIGH due to privacy issues. They are not fixers. They provide assessment, training, resources and facilitation. Very much like support groups. In that regard, counseling would be a good match. Even funnier? I got the letter from the Feds on a Friday announcing the program and they froze the funds 7 days later as they are running out of money so now I will go on a wait list and that is OK. I have been approved for Pell grants and hopefully that will get me started?? I do the placement tests for the college on Thursday. More testing!!!!!! <wink> I have a GREAT employment counselor. What ever happens happens. This has been a valuable lesson for me. It has gotten me out of my rut and given me some direction. My 1st choice would of been a Para legal but that was not on the list. One thing I know is I do not want to work in another call center. Been there and done that and 2 of our people are now heading other call centers in my community. It is time for me to do something different and find a new path to the mountain. Hi ,I think it's really funny : ~ ) that you are going to be trained as an addiction counselor!
