My initial symptoms occurred after a rear ended car accident.

Up to that point I had no idea I had chiari, eds etc...

I started seeing doctors about my rear to front headaches

after--- to sadly no help as I deteriorated for 13 years.

Also I had to settle my car accident in a minimum amount of

time...and I remember telling the lawyer that I knew my headaches

were probably going to continue and I knew something

serious was wrong...sadly I only got $8000 because one of

my own doctors insisted I was having migraines unrelated

to the accident even though they never started until the

accident.

I also had brain swelling which they misdiagnosed

as pseudotumor cerebi -- which also continued 13 years of

misdiagnosis...this was from the slamming of the back of my

head and the fluid being blocked!!! It was actually my

eye doctor that found this and tryed to get me help...

13 neurologists and 5 neurosurgeons missed this..

Didn't mean to get off on this you can tell I am still

angry about this...

Anyway..those of us that also do not have a plate in the

back of our head even wear hard collars in the car in

case of an accident for this reason --- post surgery.

AND she definitely needs to be watched and checked!!!

AND I would absolutely not settle the accident until

the very last second because you have no idea if this

is going to cause new symptoms etc..and possibly another

surgery.

Hopefully she is just sore and will be fine. I will

pray that is so.

i don't know how bad it really was...since she did have the decompression done

in 06 should she still be looked at or just watched? just not sure how the wreck

can affect someone with decompression verses someone who never had it done!

Giniger,

Get a new set of MRI's! It's always good have a good base line for the doctors

to look at. And for u to know where your head is at! Not to say the pass

knowledge is not good but after a car accident it's always beetter to wave

cosoune.

Hi, this is from Mexico.

Finally after several years I have a final diagnose beside the Tethered Cord

and the SM I have Chiari 0 and the first vertebra is also pressuring my

spinal cord, this is why I have several CSF leaks: nose, ears and lungs!!! I

will be having decompression surgery next week. I found a great doctor here

in Mexico, he is young 42, but he has done at least 20 Chiari surgeries. He

has published at least two articles in Spain about Chiari and he knows about

Milhoroat and the whole discussion about the redefinition of Chiari. He

knows a lot about the issue. He really gave me confidence so perhaps next

week I will be having surgery after 10 years of continuous torture and all

my life of different sicknesses.

Please I want your advice. I have read all the advice of all Chiari web

pages, but I think it will be nice to hear any advice from any of you.

I also want to know this:

My worst symptoms are: I can not be seated for a long time, I can not be lay

down in any side because all my body has numbness and my fingers are numbed

too and I have this head pressure, I can not swallow while seated or being

lay down and I have to have my head a little up while sleeping because if

not I can choke with my own saliva. I have arrhythmias while laying down in

my left side.

My questions are:

How many of these symptoms improved with surgery and how many stayed

forever. I know that each one of us is different but I want to know.

Thank you very much for your answers.

Good luck with everything next week !!

I had surgery June 22, 2010

My numbness was only on my left, mostly in my leg, and it is mostly gone now.

I didn't have swallowing issues, but I did have choking issues, which are also

improved.

My headaches are so much less painful and so less frequent, I'm in heaven!! I

have only had 1 headache in 7 months that I needed something stronger than

Tylonel.

I still have some heart-rate issues that my family doctor is investigating and

I'm going to end up with a cardiologist.

In the hospital they will position you on your back after surgery. OUCH! You

will hopefully have lots of pillows to position yourself comfortably. And your

bed will be raised up in the head, so you don't have to be lying flat. I know I

was nearly seated in bed most of my hospital stay. I hope there will be

wonderful nurses on staff, and you have someone there with you to help as well.

I hope everything goes well!

Around here, however, we don't look backwards for very long. We keep moving

forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious... and

curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.
