Guest guest
Dear Yvona, My daughter has had a subarachnoid shunt (several nsgs told us this is the type with the least risks) in her syrinx since 1994. It was replace once and revised twice, if I remember right. In 's case, it is an absolute necessity, despite a successful decompression with good CSF flow at the back of there skull. When it becomes clogged (by scar tissue), her syrinx enlarges and her neurological symptoms and deficits increase. Without it, she would be wheelchair bound. The down side is the development of tethered cord from scar tissue caused by the surgery (resulting in more surgery), and that because she has had so many complicated surgeries in the same area, she now has arachnoiditis. Let me know if you want to know more about her surgeon, etc. Barbara In a message dated 11/24/2010 10:16:07 A.M.
