Guest guest
Woman who battered mum to death has Asperger's syndrome, doctors reveal as sentencing is postponed - THE sentencing of a woman who battered her mother to death was postponed today after doctors said she suffered from Asperger's syndrome. Brown, 22, attacked Anne Brown, 51, with a torch in her home in Ayrshire last year during a bitter dispute. Her boyfriend, , 25, then helped her load the body into the victim's own car and dump the weighted corpse into a nearby burn. Judge Lord s had been due to sentence the pair at the High Court in Glasgow following their conviction last month, but instead ordered a medical report on Brown, who, it emerged, has been diagnosed with a form of autism. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2009/08/27/woman-who-battered-mum-to-death-has-asperger-s-syndrome-doctors-reveal-as-sentencing-is-postponed-86908-21628717/
Guest guest
If she is really AS, then I think it is more likely that he had infouence over her than the other way around, and that he was the instigator of this whole thing, and got a lighter sentence than he deserves. She would not have been able to present well in court, and if he turned on her for his own safety after the fact was discovered, then she would have been unable to know how to handle it. She may be part-way melted down now, which would explain her speaking without appropriate pronouns. I hope the sentencing is fair, somehow- I doubt she is completely innocent, but consider that there is a certain probability that he really should bear the primary guilt here as the instigator and not her. I hope there is a review of the facts by the judge, when he realizes that he and everyone else could have mis-read her demeanor at trial. I am glad he is looking into this.I know that many will be worried that all AS will be viewed as killers (or worse), but people who know me know that I will not kill anyone, and I hope the same can be said of many other AS. After all, there are far fewer murders like this one than there are AS, and most of them are committed by NS. I worry when there is a crime where one accomplice is AS and the other is NS and clearly cunning, that the AS is being made to take at least part of the fall to let the other get off lightly. Guest guest
I had been following this case as its in the west of Scotland and I know the area where the mum was found. The original premise from the media is that the daughter was a hard case, someone who couldnt deal with her mother taking over the care of the grandson, and got her chap to kill the mum in revenge. The part of Scotland that she comes from is well known for hard cases and drug abuse. I made that assumption, sadly, that this was another pair of drugged up, unfettered people going out of control. You get some desperate people in that area. But there was the poignancy of her wanting her wee boy back, so it was obvious that there was a tale to tell about why she didnt have custody of him. However, if the daughter has AS and may not put cause and effect together, she may well have spouted inappropriate remarks, such as the well documented one about asking for someone to get rid of her mum so the wee chap would have to come back to her. Who knows, whilst she was saying all this in public, she stumbled over some hard boiled thug who happily took that course of action to its fullest intent. She surely didnt mean her mum to be killed outright, I will revisit the story and re appraise it with that in mind. I shouldnt judge based on the place of residence, or the supposed lifestyle, There is clearly more to this than has been posed by the press. Thank you, , for a lesson learnt in compassion and scrutiny. Perhaps she will get some proper support now, and the wee boy may be reunited with her some day after all. Guest guest
Judy,I hope you are correct that she will now get some attention. I worry that old prejudices die hard. I hope the judge can learn more about AS and autism in general, so that he can look at the whole case afresh- and wonder if the wee boy has a few ASpie traits, too? I know that there is a great-grandmother around, and at least that is something. Thanks for your kind words, and for filling me in on more of the details. To: aspires-relationships Sent: Friday, August 28, 2009 10:43:12 AMSubject: Re: Woman who battered mum to death has Asperger's syndrome, doctors reveal as sentencing is postponed I had been following this case as its in the west of Scotland and I know the area where the mum was found.
