Hi

Thanks for this, I'm looking forward to seeing this film when its released

..

The reviews of this film in the UK have been most positive too. Hugh Dancy, who plays Adam, seems to be very supportive in explaining his understanding of the traits of AS to his interviewers.

He said that the AS is just part of a bigger story and isnt the story itself: 'Its just a story of two people trying to make contact. The story is a delicate line between humour, difficulty, romance and naivety'.

The Sunday Herald (Glasgow) arts magazine went to great lengths to explain AS as its headline story:

'Autistic Spectrum Disorders are thought to affect 1 in a 100 people in the UK. As one such disorder, AS is easier to define than it is to understand. People with the condition find it hard to read facial expressions and body language; they struggle to pick up social cues, and have trouble filtering out background noise or distractions. In particular, AS impairs the ability to understand the thoughts and emotions of others, making it hard to form relationships. To the unitiated, someone with AS can seem rigid, indifferent, rude, selfish, thoughtless or plain childish.'

When I read that out to Ian he thought it was one of the best descriptions of AS he had heard. They put AS on the front cover of their arts magazine. Whoo whoo! Ian, of course, had to say 'so we are trendy now, are we!'

Good to see that AS is getting its share of the mainstream arts! Howison has been 'out' about his AS for some time, as has Numan. I'm sure there are many other AS writers, artists and boho's out there, as well as the scientists and matheticians...

Adam

A boy-meets-girl, aspie-meets- NT romantic comedy

Written and Directed by Max Mayer

reviewed by Faith Kappenberg, Ph.D., L.C.S.W

Adam is about a young man who has lived an isolated existence until his father dies and he meets a new neighbor, Beth. She is a cosmopolitan young woman who has her own anxieties about romance, family and loss. As they become friends, Adam’s blunt, quirky qualities are off-putting and endearing. When their friendship snags, he explains how being a person with Asperger’s sets him apart from NT’s (neurotypicals, i.e., people who do not have autism). Max Mayer, writer and director of Adam, has directed more than 50 plays and prestigious TV shows, including, “Alias†and “The West Wing.†To Mayer, “the bottom line is that all relationships are difficult, and full of misunderstandings, because that’s how we’re wired… a story like this gets

at the idea that we all have a kind of innocence at our core where we can still touch each other.â€

The film has an exquisitely cast ensemble of Hugh Dancy (The Jane Austen Book Club), Rose Byrne (Damages), and veteran actors Amy Irving, Gallagher and ie Faison. Winter scenes of Central Park draw you into Adam’s solitude as it soothes his disappointments and nourishes his deep understanding of the natural world. Adam was a wise title; its simplicity highlights Adam’s individuality as a total person. This is not a story about every 29 year old with AS. It is just about Adam, who has traits, talents, epiphanies and struggles that many adults with AS experience.

To those of us who are connected to autism, Adam may initially seem stereotyped. Yet, the film develops many universal themes that are touching, humorous and generate soul searching. For people who have never had a connection to a person with autism or Asperger’s, Adam will be sensitizing. Parents and therapists may wish to prep younger viewers and family members, and be prepared afterwards to talk with them about the film.

Thanks , I appreciate your research and postings, always illuminating.

Ian and I are not married by the way, but we have been living together for 11 years, 5 of which have been with the knowledge of AS, and as such, we have much more confidence in our long term prospects than we would have had before diagnosis. That is also very much due to this list, and the people in it.

The reason we havent married is that Ian hates the decision making aspect - where who why what when - and I had one marriage that was horrible, so we are happy to plod on as we are.

Hi Judy,I feel like being an AS: If my home state of California, anyone who lifves together for at least 7 years is married in "common law", and has the same legal protections as if they had gone through the ceremony. I believe that this legal theory derives from something in Old Time England, so think you may actually be married, even though you don't know : ~ ) , playing Angel's Advocate...From: JUDY BARROW

California? I don't think I knew that. Where from, pray?

Born elsewhere (in transit), I landed first in Los Angeles (a year or

Hi Bill,I was born in C a s t r o V a l l e y, not far from Walnut Creek, but my family moved south when I was not quite 3: I lived in Alhambra, then A ltadena, then went 2 school in P asadena. I have family in several different places- primarily to the South. In an ironic twist, my NT sister lives in Camarillo, and works on the old site of the California State Institution where many of those with developmental disabilities were housed till Reagan and others helped dismantle the funding for that, and caused them to be released back into the community with supports (at present: the transition period was scary, and there were times when thoise supports were inadequate in cases). She works in a building that used to house inmates. There but for the

Grace of God, ...She is quite close to Oxnard of course. I think berkeley is absolutely beautiful! I like San Fran as well, but it is too cold and windy for my tastes, though I like the artsiness of the city in a lot of ways. Do you ever get south? The next time I fly out to visit my sister, it would be great to get together. To: aspires-relationships Sent: Tuesday, July 28, 2009 5:48:12

Are you really happy with this arrangement, or are you simply resigned

instead?

I ask because there are so many legal advantages to marriage, and it's a

shame that you would be expected to forego them merely because your

partner " hates the decision making aspect " .

Could marriage be something that he would be willing to do because it

might mean something to you?

I apologize in advance if I'm causing offense... I don't intend to. I

guess I just could never imagine myself making a lifetime commitment to

anyone who is unwilling to commit to married life with me.

Best,

~CJ

In Scotland the laws are different, so although we have legal rights in terms of, he cant run off with the Barrow family silver (if there were any), or have his mitts on my bank account, we can part at any time, only involving an advocate if we need to, in terms of who gets the record collection.

Berkeley was a *lot* nicer 50 years ago. Rather less so now..

Certainly it's possible, with just a little planning.

We both have little reason to go south now, with both our parents

gone and almost all relatives having moved away.

But one of my wife's sisters still lives and works in the general

Pasadena/Altadena area. And we've very good friends in Culver City, who

we don't see so much anymore (same reasons). For both families we *do*

drive south every so often.

So let's think about it; ...no promises.

A few blocks away from Cal Tech. As I think we discussed, a long while

back, her father was the long-time Caltech-Y Secretary (ie Big Wheel).
