Guest guest
G- Thanks for the bit about your signing experience. I had to laugh when you said your hubby didn't like not knowing what was saying! I'm finding that when I start signing more, my husband and son follow along. So, I'll just try to keep it up. Your story about 's language learning is a great motivator! Michele mom to Aubrie (10 mos) CHargE and (7 next week) IL westml@...
Guest guest
Has anyone ever figured out why so many CHARGErs are nonverbal despite no hearing loss? Is it brain? Vocal cords? or is it the same with a lot of " CHARGE things " ....nobody knows.? Foley
Guest guest
My son is not deaf, but he is non-verbal. He does babble ma-ma-ma, ya-ya-ya sounds, and imitates certain sounds like burps (sounds gross but it's really cute!) and after I take a drink, I'll go " ahhhh! " and he will imitate and laugh. I thought, if he could make that " ah " sound, he could say " hi " , but no luck so far! Our speech therapist gave us the book " Baby Signs " as well, and told us to make up simple gestures that imitate movement for words he encounters everyday. He invented his own sign: he would always hold up three fingers when he wanted a drink, so now that is his sign for drink. He will also pat his head for " hat " , and his latest invention is " pickle " (touching his index fingers together at the tips). It comes from us doing the hand play " give me five, other side, break the pickle (where you touch the index fingers together) , get a tickle! " He will also give high-fives, low-fives, etc. His only standard sign is " more " , which he can only do by banging his fists together. He also does non-sign communication, like crawling over to his shoes, holding them up to me and saying " uh " which means he wants to put his shoes on to go outside, or bringing me a book and saying " uh " when he wants me to read it to him. Of course I repeat the name of the object several times in hopes of him actually saying it or something resembling the word, but I'll have to keep you updated on that! Guest guest
- Has anyone told you why is nonverbal? I'm trying so hard to understand what is going on with the whole communication thing with Aubrie. I have a tendency to worry in advance about things that turn out to be fine, so I hope I'm not looking too far ahead on this one. Thanks for telling me about . It sounds like he is able to tell you most of the important things, but I'm sure it'd be easier if he could sign or speak more. Jack is not deaf but he is not really saying anything apart from mama mama, nanana etc and none of this is directed at me. I know he understands what is said to him as he can clap his hands when asked to do so without me showing him what to do. Guest guest
Yuka, I second 's comment that you should write a book. I love hearing you put words to the feelings that are experienced by all of us in Chargeland. It is very inspirational to hear that your son has come so far to be able to express the feelings and emotions locked up inside. I see the frustration of my 4 y.o. and hope that he, too, will unlock the communications floodgate and use different methods like sign and words to communicate with us. Glad to meet you, Jacque Clifton Austin's mom
Guest guest
Lucy said it just the way we believe it to be. Thank you Lucy. We read Oliver Sack's book 'Seeing Voices' and that convinced us to go for signing for Jaecob ASAP - the need for communication at the earliest possible age. He brings out also, as I recall, that signing uses the other side of the brain and therefore helps with our kids' spacial developement. Fortunately for us the Deaf in NZ have recently come up with teaching videos and a 4000 sign NZSL dictionary that will assist us immensly. I guess you have had similar to these for many years in the US. God bless you, Bruce and Robyn (Jaecob - CHARgE+, - a million miles better now being on the pump - no gagging at all - and very very nearly one!)
