Guest guest
Jill, could you give us an objective comparison of Medifast vs. Metagenics? I'm assuming you made a careful analysis of competing products before championing Medifast. Could you share some of your research with us? While product sold through multilevel marketing approaches can be of high quality the sales approach that often accompanies the enthusiast behind them does cause a rational person to pause and ask for more that anecdotal stories. Let me tell you and the group about the opportunity. I am participating in a company called "Take Shape for Life." It is owned by Medifast and is a multilevel marketing company. Take Shape for Life was co-founded by a Critical Care MD named Dr. Wayne Andersen. Take Shape for Life is a company that helps patients lose weight and optimize their health using the Medifast foods and health coaching. The food plan combines Medifast meals and regular food in a plan called the "5 and 1"--whereby a patient/client eats 5 Medifast meals(shakes, puddings, bars, soups, brownies, eggs, oatmeals, etc.)every 2 to 3 hours plus one "Lean and Green" meal per day(lean poultry, fish, meat or vegetarian protein) and 3 servings of green vegetables. The 5 and 1 plan is designed to promote rapid weight loss(2 to 5 pounds per week) to goal weight. The next phase of the Take Shape for Life program is "Transition and Maintenance." s Hopkins uses the Medifast foods in their weight loss program, and has conducted research on the meal plan. The difference between a person ordering food from the Medifast website vs. the Take Shape for Life website is that for the same price--roughly $300 per month (5 Medifast Meals per day=approx.$10/day) is that Take Shape for Life offers support--in the form of a free health coach, free weekly Doctor and Nurse calls(provided by Take Shape for Life) and a 24-7 website(not live) designed to support patients/clients on the program. People who sign up for Take Shape for Life are told that they must be monitored by their physicians while on the program. The benefit to having Take Shape for Life in your practice, is that you can be both the patient's physician and health coach, or have another health provider doing the health coaching. Health Coaches do not have to have any medical background, but they must be certifed by Take Shape for Life, and they cannot give any medical advice. I became involved in Take Shape for Life about 2 months ago after seeing one of my long time patients lose 35 pounds on the program and keep it off, after I had tried unsuccessfullly to help her lose weight over the years. She had initially told me about it last year, but honestly, I didn't listen to her, because she was using the packaged foods to help her lose weight, and being holistically minded, I wasn't interested in it. It wasn't until I attended a medical conference in September and heard about Take Shape for Life and then saw my patient shortly thereafter, that I decided to find out more about it. I began offering it to my patients, and I have 4 patients and 2 non-patients on the program. One of my patients had a reduction in LDL from 144 to 93 after 3 weeks on the program on no meds, and the others have lost weight quickly. As I mentioned, the weight loss is the first phase of the program. Helping patients and clients keep it off, comes with coaching them on the "Habits of Health," which is embodied in the acronym--"BE SLIM"--Breakfast, exercise, support, low fat meals--5 to 6 X/day, individual program, and monitoring. Why am I being evangelical about Take Shape for Life? Because I would like to increase my income, and "do well by doing good." I have enjoyed seeing my patients lose weight and start to feel better. There are two ways to make money--by coaching one's own patients/clients, and/or by creating teams of physicians and health coaches. This is why I wrote the email offering the opportunity. I am looking for physicians who are entrepreneurial and have integrity to work with me and make a difference in our patients and our own lives. There are many physicians already using Take Shape for Life in their practices. To learn more about Take Shape for Life, I invite you to go to my website www.drjillbaron.tsfl.com/hp and click on the icon "Achieving Optimal Health." Dr. Andersen, the co-founder of Take Shape for Life has offered to speak to anyone who is interested in learning more about it. I would be happy to set up a conference call with him for anyone who is interested. Jill Baron, MD Jill R. That being said, posts such as this are not very helpful, informative or welcome. If this is for something legitimate, I think most of those on the listserve would rather hear a straightforward message about it. We are all interested in making more money and helping our patients. "Teasers" such as this seem more appropriate for spam messages than for a collegial invitation to help. Is this how you would want business opportunities marketed to you? Let me point out that others on the listserve have shared business opportunities in an open, honest and relevant way. Some past examples have been: • Alla Kirsch's Travel Clinics of America • Haughton's DocSite.com • DeMenthon's AppointmentPlease.com Let me make some suggestions: 1. Tell us specifically what the business opportunity is, without hype or exaggeration, rather than tease us to "ask you more". 2. Tell us what the benefits are to us, or our patients. 3. Tell us what the cost will be. Give specific dollar amounts, if possible. 4. Tell us what your personal experience has been with the product or service. 5. Finally, and most importantly, tell us what your financial interest is in the recommended product or service. Finally to everyone on the listserve, I know there are some who do not want ANY advertising at all on the listserve. However, it may surprise some of you to know that there are some on the listserve who have told us that they do want to hear about products and services that might help them with their practices. Therefore, we have to maintain a healthy balance of interests in order for us to coexist peacefully. I think this can be done if we show courtesy and respect to each other and observe the proper rules of Netiquette: http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html Bottom line: outright unrequested solicitation: BAD. Impartial or full disclosure relevant advice/recommendations: GOOD. So Jill, would you like to try this again? Guest guest
Good clarifications,. Jill, I apologize if I came across rude. Your second e-mail is much more palatable as part of the list serv where the other seemed no more than a sales pitch and I did not recognize you.
